2025/26 James Garner

I think there's sometimes a bit of a disconnect between what a player means when they say they've not heard anything and what we think they're describing. I don't know in his case obviously but I think often players will be talking about an actual formal offer a contract, not the general negotiation around it which they just leave up to their agent. The same thing happened in the summer with some of those who left, it was clear that there had been discussions about the possibility of them signing new deals but no deal was formally offered to some of them because it was clear from the discussions that what we were willing to give them and what they were happy to accept weren't anywhere near matching up.
I’m sure that’s often the case, yeah - but here’s his exact words-

“Garner is waiting for the question about his future, and is relaxed when it comes. He nods at mention of Everton sorting out the contracts of James Tarkowski and then Jordan Pickford. “All I know at the moment [is] nothing's going [on]. There's been no talks. I know, obviously, my contract’s up in the summer but from my side, I've heard nothing.””

It's difficult to believe that they've briefed client journalists about their plans to sort out a new deal without at least discussing with his agent whether that's something he's even interested in discussing I think. Like I say, i obviously don't know either way but it just seems unlikely. We'll see how in demand he is in a couple of months if it's true though.

This thread kills me, so i have to keep away or try to ignore what I read, but when I see a poster who see's what i do in Garner, they get my love 💙

Garner is the heartbeat of our team.
His best qualities are undermined by his alround ability to fill positions that we have failed in recruiting.

A new contract better be top of the agenda soon, or something is seriously going wrong behind the scenes.
Football's funny isn't it. I don't mean this in an argumentative way, but I see a useful, consistent player who has a good injury history (ie no 'niggles'), can play multiple positions, and rarely makes major mistakes or errors. That's a player any team wants in their squad and I really hope he signs a new contract for that reason.

However I also see a player who is absolutely miles off the quality needed for a starting centre mid in a top half team (what we should be aspiring to). Compare him to players like Anderson, Wharton and it's just a different galaxy. The number 6 is the soul of a team that dictates so much about how the unit plays as a whole and it's where I'd allocate a LOT of our budget next summer.

Wharton is a cracking player, could fit in any team, but thats our issue with finding these talents when young, cos no chance he would head our way now..

Anderson was a stupid PSR mistake by Newcastle and now he's stuck under Dyche like Garner was, thi I'm sure he will have offers in the summer.

Garner - is just an Agree to Disagree subject, which is totally fine, thats what makes forums.

When you can both accept each other's points without it turning into mayhem.
That's why I try to engage less in Garner chat..

Hopefully the future is picking up these gems early..

Absolutely, I’m baffled by the interview with Henry Winter in which he says he’s heard nothing. Infact, it seems a reasonable assumption that his management team has set up that interview purely to flag up his contractual situation to interested parties and try and encourage us to get our act together.
Hopefully it's us just waiting to make another 'New Contract Announcement' like with the others, to show the player and us a bit more 'moving forward' love..

I mean he’s mediocre and won’t ever play for a better club than Everton in the rest of his career.
For that reason, I imagine people are relaxed about his contract situation.

Certainly hope so - waiting till the last possible day to sign Charly, then only offering him that initial 2 year deal has meant that I’ve not got much confidence in the decision makers!

Would like to see him play at right back for a few games tbh

With his crossing ability he will have more space to cross when he’s playing behind Ndiaye on the right as Ndiaye will drag several players towards him and we will probably attempt more crosses as well as he can also make crosses from deep.

Thing is, if we had already been questioning keeping him on, why wouldn't we sign him up before now and make a tasty profit rather than let him move for free.
