Jail Sentence Lengths

Allardyce Out
I studied Law, but it still bewilders me.

Here's the thing.

1 )

Bloke kidnaps a 10-year-old girl in a car, drives her miles away from her home, takes her into a woods, sexual assaults her, threatens to kill her then abandons her.

He gets 5 years or so in prison.

2 )

Bloke throws a fire extinguisher off a building, hits no one.

He gets 2 1/2 years in prison.

Is it just me or are jail sentences really, really out of whack with what should be happening? For me, the first one should be life, the second one should be a year tops!

If that first one was the bloke in South Wales, he did get life - or rather he got an undeterminate sentence, with a recommendation that he served five. IIRC the then government bitched about it at some length, whilst of course forgetting to mention that it was they who drew up the sentencing guidelines in the first place.

Nope it's some bloke from Crosby; same thing, five years but indeterminate, but the very fact he could foreseeably be out in five years makes me rage.

Unfortunately this country is hampered by a lack of space and basically a jail shortage. I remember recently judges and magistrates being told to jail only the most dangerous and persistent criminals. It's embarrassing really, the leniency of the sentencing in this country is appalling.

I have an idea for a company that refits off shore oil rigs (or purpose builds other floating jail type places) into secure units for 'lifers'. Then we could actually start putting people away properly.

Where do people stand on rehabilitating prisoners? A waste of time and resources or a worthwhile humanitarian effort?

Depends on the crime. Drug addicts, thieves... it's worth it financially long term if it's effectively used. It CAN be effectively used if resources weren't wasted on murderers, rapists, pedophiles and such, who should be locked in one room and fed bread and water put bluntly. Should cost us £1'000 a year tops to imprison one of those turds.

some people can be rehabilitated, some cant. you have to try i guess. my uncle has served time in the past, not sure what for haven't asked, and i think hes a top bloke. but im family so i guess i see the best and not the worst

There's no room in prisons anymore, what do you expect?

The rapist gets a short sentence because there's 3'000 benefit frauds in the queue.

I remember hearing about a drunk driver who ran over and killed a child.

Some low life subsequently stole a teddy bear placed at the memorial of said child.

The thief got more time in prison.

I was stunned by the fire extinguisher sentence - but it's part of the guidelines. He could've conceivably got life, because it was a public place and he could've easily killed someone.
As for the other case, an indeterminate sentence means he'll only be let out if ****s think he's not a **** anymore - after five years.
Amazing though, he should be set on fire.

Amen, burn these sh*thouses at the stake.

Might help if they stopped putting people who are no threat to society, run their own legitimate business, pay their dues and hurt nobody in prison for daft stuff like growing a few ganja plants to sort them and their mates out...

Thought that kid who chucked the fire extinguisher was lucky they didn't try and do him for attempted murder to be quite honest and 5 years for the scumbag who assaulted the little girl and left her for dead is just risible. Sentencing seems pretty damn arbitrary at times.

You can only be charged with attempted murder if you have an intent to kill someone. Manslaughter would have been the call at most.

They DID try to go for attempted murder simply to bring the student riots into check.

It was wrong obviously, but 2 1/2 years is incredibly steep given that rapists get similar.

I agree with your point on marijuana; the most outdated and socially backwards law in existence, and I don't smoke the stuff and never will.

Absolutely. I am always stunned at how lenient the sentences for rape are.
