Interview with Neville Southall

I said to @GrandOldTeam earlier, I just sat there like "I'm chatting to Nev on the phone in my box room here". Ha-ha. Surreal. Wish I could go back and tell that little seven-year-old me in the street end that one day he'll have a chat with Nev about Everton. Enjoyed it though, he's got some funky ideas but I respect them all because it's him. Such a nice fella and again, he didn't have to spend time talking to me.

Thanks for listening and being supportive as always @ijjysmith!

just as i'm reading this line, he gets to the point about Arsenal and asks you the question about would 20 years of Top 4 finishes be acceptable ... queue silence for a couple of seconds of silence before you realised he asked you a question ha You were star strucked on the phone ;)

i think this interview is exactly the sort of evidence to show why we shouldn't be buying players such as michael keane imo. People think rooney's finished, which may well be right, but it's a no brainer buying him for me, he's been there, done that, won everything there is to win. Think of what he can pass onto and bring into our squad. That FA Cup semi final last year, we played well enough to win it a couple of times, but some of our players froze on the big occasion because they're not used to winning the big occasions.

We're not going to be able to attract the top top quality players, but if we can get those with the right mentality, we'll be a lot better off with what we can attract. Dirk Kuyt is a good example, very limited player, but he always turned up in big games, especially against us and always scored big goals, purely because of his mentality.

The part about Kuyt is true, a pretty limited footballer that has incredible big game ability.

The thing about him though is he was an important (and he certainly was) part of good Liverpool teams, but he had some really great players leading the team (Alonso, Mascherano, Gerrard, Torres, Suarez). Apart from Lukaku, we don't have this quality. Also, Kuyt left Liverpool when his prime was ending. Rooney would be coming here as his is/has ended. Rooney would be on double the wages Kuyt was, in his prime.

Yeah, but I feel we have to get players of rooneys calibre on to help us attract players like that in their prime. Naismith was very similar for us.
