GRRRR my mrs appears to have been the victim of Internet ID theft. Some Amerircan has tried to buy some computer game using her account details.
Now i use her laptop all the time for buying stuff, do any of you have any top tips for making it secure as I'm not clued up with this kind of thing. I think we have some software to stop it but no idea. Pretty clueless.
We are very fuming at the moment.:dodgy:

I use Microsoft security essentials.. It's free and has good reviews. Avast/ Avira are both free and "used" to work well..

How did you find out that someone "American" tried stealing her ID? For someone not to computer savvy that info would be damn hard to get on your own.. Credit company's? I'm guessing..

Bank noticed a weird looking transaction on her account.

weird..

Mate, don't use the same password on different sites, change it up a bit.. I would change the password on all your frequented web sites after this.. Make sure your security is up and running before hand..

Scan your system immediately with Malwarebytes, Spybot Search and Destroy and any Anti-Virus software you wish (AVG and Avast are decent).

Don't run them at the same time though. One after another, in the order I've wrote them above. :)

Oh, and do it in Safe Mode preferably, and definitely whilst disconnected from the internet.

Cool. Cheers.

Do i need to download those thing first? Sorry as I said, clueless.

For anti-spyware I use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Super Anti-Spyware!

And use Comodo firewall you munts!!!

As tubey said, d/l you anti spyware stuff, update it and run the scan in safe mode.

It doesn't really matter if you have up to date av etc, I you make a purchase online etc without a secure connection (ssl, https) connection, it's like shouting your credit card connection across a street. Your bank can provide security protection etc, and use a browser that gives you good encryption support, and if you can use 2factor authentication (card reader etc)

Doesn't sound like it's a security issue on your comp. More like someone has your account details, was it a steam game or a physical disk from a shop she bought, if it's a shop she has your bank details, call your bank asap if so.

Don't know. But she's in England and the details were used in USA. Literally no idea how they would have got her details though.
