I know there is a plaque at Goodison behind the Park End to an Everton player I think he was a keeper who was a first world war hero,I've got it in the recesses of my mind there may have been a fella we sold to Chelsea who was honoured in the great war too, thats the only tenuous link I could come up with, really interesting though those badges.

Yeah this player is on that plaque:
Corporal Thomas Gracie (12 June 1889 – 23 October 1915), 16th Battalion of The Royal Scots. Service No: 19024

Died 23/10/1915 aged 26

Buried at Craigton Cemetery, Glasgow, grave P17

Aha I reckon you're onto something here because McCrae's battalion were enrolled into the Scottish Football Association Hall of Fame in 2014 - that explains the Everton crest being the one season 'beehive' crest. Raith Rovers players and Hibs players both initially enlisted in McCrae's battalion too. But If Hearts made the pin badge you could understand if they chose to leave Hibs out. But still doesn't explain Everton, Brechin, Portsmouth or Chelsea connection ?

Great thread, fascinating subject. Been trying to find something concrete that connects all 6 clubs on the badge, but the only thing found is that all 6 suffered human losses during World War 1.

Raith and Hearts wore special shirts when the 2 teams played each other last November, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of joining McCrae's Battalion: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/raith-rovers-go-ahead-wear-special-4578331

3 Chelsea players signed up to the Footballers Battalion in 1914: http://www.football-league.co.uk/news/article/2014/the-footballers-battalions-2145968.aspx

Portsmouth released a special match shirt last season (August 2014) to commemorate the memory of the Pompey Pals, who fought in the 14th and 15th battalions of the Hampshire Regiment, recruited heavily at Fratton Park: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/28642187

THOMAS GRACIE Corporal
Royal Scots

Tom Gracie travelled with the Scotland team to play against England at Goodison in 1911. Although the Morton forward was not capped, he signed for Everton immediately after the game. Gracie made 19 appearances before moving to Liverpool and then on to Heart of Midlothian, where he was the Scottish League’s joint top scorer in the 1914/15 season. Gracie and his Hearts team-mates enlisted in the 16th Royal Scots on mass in 1914.

Perhaps easiest to email the club.
If they are using the Everton badge, then it should be endorsed by the club which means they would know what it is all about
