Impact of injuries

Player Valuation: £50m
I feel the impact of injuries we have suffered as a team has been hugely understated so far by us fans but also others such as the media.

We could pretty much field a decent team full of players who have suffered mid to long term injuries this season, the number I think is quite unprecedented within the league.

GK - clearly no injury here
RB - Coleman (missed four weeks)
CB - Alcaraz (missing for 3 months)
CB - Stones (missing for 3 months plus)
LB - Oviedo ( missed all season thus far due to injury recovery)

RM - Mirallas (missed six weeks plus)
CM - Gibson (recovering from long term injury..missed 8 weeks or so)
CM - McCarthy (out for 3-4 weeks and potentially injured now)/Barry (injured now for 'weeks rather than months')
LF - Pienaar (missed 4 weeks)

CAM - Barkley (missed 7 weeks)
FW - Kone (missed all season) / Rom has been unfit for six weeks carrying an injury.

Genuinely cant think of a team who has suffered as much or as frequent. Its not just fringe players either, Coleman,Stones,Mirallas,McCarthy and to a lesser extent Pienaar all make us tick as a team.
That team up there imho would be top 10 easily.

In my opinion it shows a) how unlucky we have been and b) that were doing just fine currently in comparison to being able to get a full strength team out.

Others have suffered injuries but only to one player or two. We have suffered significantly more than anyone in the league and consequently our position reflects that.

I fully expect with a bit more luck with injuries (to ourselves or other teams) we will be in or around 4th again. Keep the faith.

My question will always be every year.

Why do we have it every year? If it wasn't the moyes injuries it is largely the similiar Martinez injuries we have on a whole.

A lad can break his bones or have an illness or pull something unusual like any other team but we always have some sort of injury crisis and they always seem to be similar.

I may be wrong but I cant recall it being the level it has been this season ever?

While I doubt it has been this bad for a year, the reason for a large number of injuries is hard to say exactly.

I'm not a physiotherapists nor do I have any real knowledge of sports injuries, but the relative small size of our squad may be a key aspect.

A small squad requires players to play more minutes, train harder and gives less time for periods of rest. This must put some extra strain on them.

Furthermore, you have a faster style of play requiring more explosive movement. How many hamstring injuries have we had in past 18 months?

Then, when a player does get injured it adds an extra dimension as all the above is further multiplied. Players got less rest over the summer too!

I think we'll have more injuries this season. We need a good rest next summer and everyone to recover before the problem will be alleviated.

We don't have a small squad relative to other teams.

That is said every year as well. In fact i would argue that we have had worse injury crisis's in the past than now. I mean out of all the injured, kone oviedo and alcaraz are expected and in my opinion Piennar as well. Only Barkley Barry and Coleman are the fresh injuries this year so to speak.

So what about Stones and McCarthy too?
I am afraid I have to disagree with your argument; they are in the squad and them not playing means there is less chance of being able to 'rest' a player and thus they have an indirect effect on the fact players are not afforded that chance.

McCarthy isnt a proper injury. only a couple of weeks and match inflicted is not the same as something in the leg going. Or in better terms, if you get a bad back working in a warehouse its expected the more you do it, but jarg your knee randomly and its not. So if more and more people jargged their knee then you would say there was a pattern and try and solve that problem, where is people just get general injuries like a bad back then its part and parcel of modern football.

Stones i forgot about lol

But i do think there is a pattern under martinez as there was a pattern under moyes. different patterns but similar none the less.

But your point about them not being in the sqaud, there is cover everywhere now on the team so a few missing isnt as bad as it once was. Therefore if players dont get the rest they need through playing more games it is down to the manager, but not blaming martinez for wanting his best players on the pitch so thats not the pattern of it i mentioned

Jesus. Heard it all now. McCarthy not a proper injury.

So if he misses matches (missed at least 3 already) then its not counted??! Ok.

Mirallas?

Comparing injury problems now to injury problems in the past is silly.

In the past we had a paper thin squad, so yeah, and injury here and there stretched us.

The list of injuries we have now is massive. We have a deep squad now, but have been plagued with injuries to stretch us. Combine that with Europe, and yeah, we look paper thin again.
