Player Valuation: Free Transfer
Started talking about this in another thread so thought it would be good to have one of its own!

I think that Everton would be title contenders and a major threat in Europe if there was a 3-5 foreigner rule in place. As a Scot I've seen this work wonders for our domestic game and International team as we cannot afford to buy big-money players and must bring through young players.

Players like Lescott,Neville and Vaughan prove that you don't need million pound dumplings hanging around for their paycheck. You just need a solid spine and a team that plays for the jersey and each other...

What say you?

Lets bring in such a rule now and bankrupt the [Poor language removed]

I say it would be a crazy rule. Affirmative action at it's worst. Lets try sorting out the mess that is our academy structure and we might get players that can pass to one another and then managers wouldn't have to sign players from abroad. After all, if our kids were so good they'd be snapped up by someone, even if they couldn't break through the wall of jonny foreigners here. After all, if we're bringing so many over here there must be plenty of places up for grabs in their domestic leagues.

Anyone know how many English players play abroad in comparison to our major international counterparts?

Bruce thats like asking how many English bricklayers work in Poland, people go where the money is(y)

Hang on a minute, aren't the foreigners that actually play in the first team supposed to be the money grabbing mercenaries rather than the English kids sat on their arse collecting the pay cheques for doing nothing? ;)

I would love to back to at least 5 players being from the country the team plays in but it will never happen because its cheaper to buy foreign players and also the rich clubs would use common market laws to veto it:(

Under the present European system Bruce please define foreigner(y)

In all honesty the rich clubs wouldn't have to because it is now the law, 1992 Maastricht (?spelling) agreement signed up for by John Major

One thing that we can all be sure about if English teams could only field 5 foreigners per game is that Arsenal would be ******! Manchester United wouldn't really be affected though, not really.

Man U don't have that many English players. Did that foreigner rule extend to Scottish and Welsh players?

Didn't do but now that they've got their own elected governments.........could well do. If it doesn't then we could find a counter argument about having a GB side rather than the present set up, Europe and all that, you never know.

Allowing teams to field player from any country should allow the best of each country to come through, regardless if that ends up being in their own country. I'm completely against having a mandatory number of "home" players in a team, I think its fair and competitive to simply find the best players that you can buy.

In the end the young english players simple arnt as good as the ones being produced by europe as a whole, so obviously continental europeans outnumber english players at most big english clubs, its obvious.

Thats not saying that one particular country is any better than england at producing footballers but if you way up 1 country in england against all the other european countries then its going to look unbalanced.

I say the same as Bruce, sort out the academies to improve english/british youngsters rather than limiting non-british players, that simply wouldnt be good for the game.

So you don't think that there would be something wrong with, say, Arsenal winning the Champions League with no British players playing?

The question was directed at Sim, but I'd say no. Wenger, and indeed any manager, has an obligation to make their club the best it can be, they have no obligation to produce players for the national team.
