2025/26 Idrissa Gana Gueye

Do we really need a replacement for him though? Garner, KDH, Tim Iroegbunam, Rohl, Armstrong, Alcaraz for the three midfield spots (if we think of it that way) is more than adequate, I’d suggest.

Yep Tim is ideal unless there’s a proper player out there we can pick up

But we need to be boxing off a left back, two right backs, a striker and at least one winger before we even look at a midfielder

All depends on finances.

I agree that we are well covered in midfield and therefore it's not a top priority.

However if we let Gana and Alcaraz go I'd like to see us bring in a top quality midfielder providing that we've already signed 2 full backs , a striker ,and winger

Totally agree that if more than one from midfield leaves we need one in, unless they try to rebrand Dibling as the Charlie ‘replacement’ (if it is him and not Tim that goes), but if it’s just Gana I’d be looking at the glaring gaps in the team like the ones you mentioned.

Quality full backs are priority number one, and should have been so since about 2022 🤣

Would depend if we get Europe and I'm expecting Alcaraz to leave too
Even if we get Europe I’d assume six midfielders is sufficient… we have glaring gaps in almost all the wide positions, and technically Dibling and Grelish (if he comes… which is a whole other topic of discussion) can play the ten slot.

I can see McNeil, Beto, Patterson & one of Alcaraz or (less likely) Tim going tbh… I also think we will be pressured to sell Garner and/or Illy if either do well At the World Cup and we’re not in Europe.

That leaves us in horrific shape in a bunch of positions, and getting both full backs and at least one winger in early should be a given.

We’re well covered for 8s, but not for 6s - if Jimmy G got an injury we’d be screwed. For me, Tim’s great pressing and running power, but middling distribution means that he’s more of an 8 than a 6 himself, similar to Merlin. I could see Charly leaving and Moyes rebalancing the squad by bringing in the proper holding midfielder he apparently made a priority last summer, but didn’t manage to get.

If Gana scores vs Sunderland on Sunday... he'll go third oldest Everton scorer in the Premier League.*

Ashley Young, 39 years 149 days (the oldest scorer of a direct freekick in PL history H vs wolves, 4-0)[Goodison]
Richard Gough, 37 years, 138 days (H vs southampton 4-1)[Goodison]
*
Phil Jagielka, 36 years 233 days (H vs arsenal 1-0)[Goodison]
Mark Hughes, 36 years 152 days (H vs watford 4-2)[Goodison]
Idrissa Gana Gueye, 36 years 43 days (H vs fulham 2-0)[BMD]

He's ~ 36 and 231 days on Sunday so a miscalculation here*. Ofc Coleman at 37 and ~ 220 days could change it all.

Alan Stubbs is currently the oldest PL player for us to score away from home, at white hart lane 35 years 315 days (a W 3-1)
