2025/26 Idrissa Gana Gueye

Fantastic goal and has been a wonderful servant.

However for me against the better teams he struggles in a two. Goes walk about way too much. Passing is not great either.

He's fine for where we’re at, sure, but you’d hope they’d bring it his successor next summer.

Think he’s the weakest link in our midfield now personally. Think Garner and KDH have both started the season better.

I wonder if his eventual replacement will be Rohl.

The chasing and harrying types remind me of the Royle dogs of war but I do wonder if we could do with a sitter to spread the play and intercept.

Going to be interesting next summer to see which direction is taken.

Love the fella but he looked painfully exposed early on yesterday, like his legs might actually be going.

Still a fantastic player but we might need to manage his games a little better, and who he starts against, depending on the opposition.

Think he struggles when teams are clever behind him, he leaves gaps when he presses and Ekitike and Gakpo were very clever in their movement.

Garner wasn’t covering the space behind either so it left holes in the middle.

We should have played a flat three I think instead of 4-5-1;

Garner
Gana KDH

Gana should never be the deepest midfielder IMO, not disciplined enough.

It is a symptom of an unbalanced midfield that aren't sure of who is doing what. The CM blend is all wrong. We'll see us overwhelmed like leeds and yesterday again a few times this season. Maybe with Branthwaites speed and some better distribution at LB or RB we can take some of the pressure off, but when we're off it in CM, the entire side stinks.

Think would have been a great sub yesterday as needed another mid next to garner yesterday to sit in deep at the start of the game. As they was always going to try put the pressure on early, then could bring him on later in the game. Is all about having a mix of players so can adapt for games. Still have that problem at the club ,even next season think should play a big part if used correctly

We’ve missed a sitter on many occasions

I get what you are saying. However when ever Gana isn't playing I think we look a worse side. Maybe that's because it's been iroengbunam that has taken his place.

I would like to see him rested for wolves. And try garner with either rohl (if fit) or KDH in a deeper role.

It would be interesting to see how they would do. But I genuinely think there's a chance we would miss not having Gana if we went with that line up.

Hes being asked to do everything again and it shows . He really needs a deputy in there covering him . I dont see his legs going at all hes actually improved a lot.
Yeah if he goes to press his partner should be sitting in.

We don’t look balanced in some games (usually against three man midfields) with Gana/Garner. I think we’d suit 4-3-3 and just drop Garner deepest with KDH/Gana pressing.

Seems to be the only player capable of rushing the opponents in giving the ball away which at times takes him into positions far too advanced leaving big gaps for garner to fill...shame he is not better at shooting/assisting because he could then play more in the 10...

Everyone in this thread talking about more sitting players or sitting deeper or anything like that is just looking at this team wrong. We are not a team that should sit. We’re unleashing Gueye to go be aggressive and start attacks. He’s doing it well. We’re getting into trouble when we aren’t pushing up to do that. This is a front foot team and he’s a front foot player.

I don’t think you ever played midfield did you.

You can’t just press and play front foot the entire time. It’s exactly why Ekitike and Gakpo were finding space between the lines.

Gareth Barry for example closes off half of those passing lanes they were finding. It’s about balance.
