A new craze has swept the great and the good of the world – the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge – and we're here as ever to spare your blushes and make sure you're not the one asking the trendy guy in the office to explain it. Thank us later.

In short, it's people soaking themselves in freezing cold water - usually by pouring a bucket of ice water over their heads - to raise money for the Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis ( ALS ) Association.
