Steven Pienaar is preparing to re-ignite Everton’s creative spark ahead of a crucial week in the struggling Blues’ season.
The influential South African midfielder will take part in training at Finch Farm this week, and although Wednesday’s game against Hull is likely to come too soon, he could make a much-needed return for the weekend’s derby clash with Liverpool.
Pienaar is the only one of Everton’s shocking injury list who is near to returning, after suffering the curse of the knee injury which has ripped through the Toffees’ squad this season.
Pienaar was stretchered off during the Blues away game against Portsmouth in September, and although he was thought to be on the brink of a return before the Europa League tie against Benfica, he had yet to fully recover.
Manager David Moyes, who branded the trip to Hull’s KC stadium as “massive”, said: “Steven is the only one who is near coming back. He will hopefully train this week and we’ll take it from there.
“It's important we pick ourselves up. I've been here (Old Trafford) many times and lost with Everton but there's been a lot of games where I've thought we played really well and were unfortunate not to come away with something. But not on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the Blues will have to contend without Marouane Fellaini on Wednesday. A booking picked up by the Belgian international in the first half was his fifth of the season – meaning he serves a one-game ban for the trip to Humberside.
Tim Cahill, who played against Manchester United despite suffering a groin injury on international duty with Australia, will also undergo a fitness check. Striker Louis Saha will also need checking on, after also playing with an injury against Alex Ferguson’s champions.

Need him on a new contract!

Him and Billy back for the derby! It's not all doom & gloom! COYB!!! 6 points from 6 this week!

hasn't billy got another game to serve ?

fellaini interrupting, with billy and pienaar would make our midfield supply line totally different to at present.
i noticed on sat. that whenever we had the ball with space to run at, cahill just couldn't manage it, in particular, saha had it on 1/2 way and their whole 1/2 was empty but cahill couldn't make a run at all, makes me wonder what he is carrying ?

No i'm sure he can play, it is 3 games for a straight red, he's missed West Ham, United and Hull will be his third game on weds - back to terrorise the [Poor language removed] on sat! :D

We need to show more passion....we looked beaten before we started on Sat. Lack of leaders on the pitch , coupled with complete lack of flair and spark.

Pienarr could provide some relief, but everyone has to stand up and be counted.

Pienaar will probably be on the bench for the derby. No point in rushing him into it and him getting injured.

But would give the team a boost with Bily, Pienaar and Fellaini back (being he's suspended for the Hull game).

I can't take a great deal of comfort from this. Neville and Osman not even "near" to returning ?? They may not be our best players, but we need their drive and determination right now, as well as the extra options that they would give Moyes.

So for the Hull game where we desperately need 3 points our midfield will be without Arteta, Pienaar, Bily, Fellaini, Neville and Osman even if Cahill is passed fit.

Then for the derby and for the crucial clash in Athens it looks as though Neville and Osman will still be out. Pienaar will be doubtful and even if passed fit probably won't get a full 90 minutes.

Much as I'm looking forward to seeing Pienaar and Bily patrolling the flanks again, I think a lot will still rest on the shoulders of fringe players and struggling players to produce more than they have been doing.

The Echo have said this quite a few times already, each time he never returns.

o.s. saying it as well tb
Steven Pienaar could boost Everton's squad by returning to action in time for the Merseyside derby.
The midfielder is set to take part in training over the next few days following eight weeks out with a knee injury sustained at Portsmouth.
However David Moyes said Phil Neville and Leon Osman are unlikely to feature in the clash with Liverpool on Sunday.
“Steven is the only one who is near coming back. He will hopefully train this week and we’ll take it from there," said the Everton manager.
Following the 3-0 defeat at Manchester United on Saturday, the Blues boss wants his players to focus on the trip to Hull on Wednesday before they think about the derby.
The manager described the match at the KC Stadium as "massive" after the result at Old Trafford.
“It's important we pick ourselves up," said Moyes. "I've been here (Old Trafford) many times and lost with Everton but there have been a lot of games where I've thought we played really well and were unfortunate not to come away with something. But not on Saturday."
