Howard Kendall

We've only got one statue at Goodison, for Dixie Dean. And that's 13 years old.

It's a strange one really, we've had lots of really great players and managers over our history, but we've never really gone in for statues. Part of that is due to there not being much free land around the ground.

If we ever move to a new stadium, I think we might see one or two more statues then. It would be quite the debate as to who should get one, that's for sure.

If we get another statue it would probably be Alan Ball, our greatest post war player, I think.

Kendall is an Everton God for those of us who saw him play. I watched his debut and was a thoroughly unimpressed 12 year old but Jeez he got better. Unfussy but implacably determined. He and Ball provided the drive and never-say-die attitude and Harvey the grace and intelligence. Together those three carried all before them and willed us to the championship in 1970....that season has sustained me ever since.

And I can see glimmers of that side in our current one....honestly. In 1969 we got 3rd (behind Leeds and that lot, I think) but anybody could see that we were building momentum and would get better and better. With Ball and Kendall I knew in my heart that we had a big chance to nail the title. I feel the same way now.

Btw: Sunderland Afc: Raich Carter, surely?

100% bona fide legend, both as a player and as manager.

Howard is part of the fabric of the club, it's history, it's heartbeat.

Welcoming him back with open arms is Bobby's greatest achievement this season.
