I was going to post this in the Sigurdsson thread but wanted to make another comparison with City when they made a 'statement' in signing Robinho from Real Madrid, to make a case for why Sigurdsson would most likely turn out to be a good purchase if we were to get him.
I've checked Robinho's goal scoring record at Real Madrid and he scored 25 goals in 101 appearances for them. That is a 1 in 4 goal scoring record for a forward playing for a team like Real Madrid, which isn't anything to shout about and he was also unproven in the Premier League. Yet when Robinho signed the whole league took note purely for the extortionate price tag and the fact that it was a Brazilian player coming in from Real Madrid.
By contrast Sigurdsson is a midfield player who has scored 34 goals in 121 appearances since rejoining for a Swansea side that has finished between 8th and 15th whilst he has been there. That's not far off 1 in 3 and he has proven himself in this league.
So if people forget that Robinho had a fancy Brazilian name, the £45m we are potentially spending on Sigurdsson will most likely turn out to be a better 'statement' signing than Robinho as we all know how that turned out. I think people get too carried away by the perceived prestige of certain players and ignore the value of others who contribute far more, despite playing for less glamorous clubs. Sigurdsson has stuck it out in this league for 6 seasons, despite not having the best time of it at Spurs as well which shows a desire to succeed.
Personally think the fee is over the top, but how many aren't these days? We paid close to £30m for a goalkeeper who has payed 31 games in the top flight. It would be nice for us to go out and get someone in that would make other clubs sit up and take notice, but I also think we're doing that to an extent with the money were throwing round for players.
