Horror Films

I don't really understand what people get out of watching horror films. I liked Poltergeist because it had a half-decent plot too, but I see adverts for things like Saw, Hostel, etc, and they are just ridiculous. I often wonder about the screenwriting sessions for these films, its like an outpouring of the most twisted imaginations known to man.

The first Saw was a great film that wasn't too gruesome. It didn't show much which kept the scene with the Saw itself horrific and the ending still amazes me. However it's spawned all these "torture porn" movies that are just absolutely god awful, this includes every Saw movie after the first one. I stopped after the second because I could see where it was going. I don't class them as horror, I'd definitely just call them "torture porn". These don't belong in the same breath as great movies like The Shining and Alien or any other great HORROR movie.

The Decent is pretty good, and if you fancy a proper long one watch Stephen King's IT lol creepy clown.

I'm a huge King fan. "It" is probably my favourite book. This 3 parter is soooo dated now though. Still some good bits (Tim Curry of course), but it's kinda lame elsewhere. The scene at the Chinese restaurant for starters. I like the bits where they're all kids but the adult versions really annoy the heck outta me. The Stand is similar.

IT is brilliant right up until the end. Possibly the most deflating ending I've ever seen (except LOST of course, which can never be beaten).

Is Alien a horror film? I watched it not too long ago for the first time, it was ok. Perhaps it was one of those films you needed to see when it came out, I wasn't particularly impressed. Event Horizon was much better at creating that claustrophobic tension.

You could argue that horror is subjective and this could go into Sci-Fi genre instead but I think that anything that is designed to scare you like that is horror. Event Horizon is a good one as well. Not too sick and twisted but just enough to unsettle you.

Plus it's easy to say that Alien isn't scary when you're a grown man. How about when you're 10 years old and you snuck downstairs to watch it because mum told you specifically not to and tried to put it out of reach lol.

Im really not into/arsed/fussed about horror films. Just dont see the point in some with excessive violence and gore like the Hostel or Centipede ones. Horror in general is quite laughable I find..
