I don't really understand what people get out of watching horror films. I liked Poltergeist because it had a half-decent plot too, but I see adverts for things like Saw, Hostel, etc, and they are just ridiculous. I often wonder about the screenwriting sessions for these films, its like an outpouring of the most twisted imaginations known to man.
The Decent is pretty good, and if you fancy a proper long one watch Stephen King's IT lol creepy clown.
I'm a huge King fan. "It" is probably my favourite book. This 3 parter is soooo dated now though. Still some good bits (Tim Curry of course), but it's kinda lame elsewhere. The scene at the Chinese restaurant for starters. I like the bits where they're all kids but the adult versions really annoy the heck outta me. The Stand is similar.
The first Saw was a great film that wasn't too gruesome. It didn't show much which kept the scene with the Saw itself horrific and the ending still amazes me. However it's spawned all these "torture porn" movies that are just absolutely god awful, this includes every Saw movie after the first one. I stopped after the second because I could see where it was going. I don't class them as horror, I'd definitely just call them "torture porn". These don't belong in the same breath as great movies like The Shining and Alien or any other great HORROR movie.
Is Alien a horror film? I watched it not too long ago for the first time, it was ok. Perhaps it was one of those films you needed to see when it came out, I wasn't particularly impressed. Event Horizon was much better at creating that claustrophobic tension.
IT is brilliant right up until the end. Possibly the most deflating ending I've ever seen (except LOST of course, which can never be beaten).
What about Childs Play?I've seen most of the suggestions in this thread. I've settled on Trick & Treat so far.
