Hillborough police refuse to give evidence to new inquest

surely, some of this is criminal negligence they can be summoned to the court to give evidence. How long must people wait for the whole truth and justice.

If there's a question of them being guilty of criminal acts, surely they should be arrested and tried, negating the need for their evidence at the inquest.

Villainous bastards.

That is why they want to delay things though (there are criminal investigations underway) and why inquests usually take place after the conclusion of criminal trials.

Precisely.

They can't have it both ways. You can't have an inquest quickly but then expect people to give evidence when they're undergoing criminal proceedings.

You could, if it was made abundantly clear that inquests were to be about how a person (or in this case many people) died, and changed the law so that testimony could be compelled from witnesses, perjury would still be illegal etc, but the resultant evidence would be inadmissable in any subsequent criminal trial.

I reckon that if public opinion is strong enough, they might not be able to refuse for long

It's a legal right mate so I can see it changing over this .

I'm loathe to do anything that may be given as supporting the police over this whole terrible incident but I do agree. I don't agree with what's happened obviously but If they are under investigation then it's likely and even understandable that a few of them
Are going to want to make use of the right to silence (well what hasn't been chipped away already) .

The whole case has been text book from the authorities in how not to handle a disaster and its aftermath and however unpleasant it must be for the families I can see why someone would want to not risk incriminating themselves, even if they were innocent .

I feel really sorry for the elderly relatives of the 96; they must be desperate to see justice done before anything happens to themselves and they dont see people explaining their actions.

If this was rich and powerful people wronged then these coppers would be frog-marched into the dock with the help of a bit of prodding behind the scenes and the full force of the establishment kicking their arse into court. They're just ordinary people though, and they'll have a longer wait than they should have to endure.
