Possibly the first boy band in the world? Never played instruments on their first two albums, just took turns on lead vocals. A group of actors coming together, pretending to be a Beatles-like pop group. Only for a year later to learn how to play instruments to a fashion and toured the USA!

Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith were already competent musicians and song writers, whereas Davy Jones and Micky Dolenz were already established child actors and had television experience.

They made 52 short 20 minute episodes aired over 2 years of high popularlity and fame in the 60's, with dozens of repeats every school holidays during the 70's and 80's!

Well known popular hits include Daydream Believer, I'm a Believer and Pleasant Valley Sunday.

Part of growing up through the 60's,70's and 80's.

Most viewers had a favourite Monkee, who was yours?

If you're gay or female it will be maybe Davy Jones or so Mrs Degsy tells me

I saw a doco where the american producer said it was in the pipe line BEFORE A Hard Days Night

Total B*ll*cks it was a rip off pure and simple....and why not

once the 4 egos got going it became, from the suits point of view unmanagable, which is why thry made the follow up, ' The Archies ' as a cartoon, which they thought they couls control

aka one hit wonder

I read Hard Days Night was the main inspiration. A money-making machine indeed, but it grew into something much bigger and popular than realised and BOOM! All over in three years.
Made their own parody film called 'Head', starts off with Mickey attempting suicide by jumping off a bridge, only to be saved by mermaids. The film takes the viewer in a circle demonstrating that they are trapped within a commercial box, from which they can not escape.

Davy Jones, born just down the road in Manchester, appeared in Corrie.

Of course Hard Days Night was the inspiration the ' suits ' in charge just tried to say it wasn't a Beatles copy / rip-off

I thought they were ace.....so there.

In the 70's I would watch the action, but go and get a snack when they started singing!
Into the 80's, I would listen to the singing and started buying the albums and singles.
Have seen them live in Manchester and Wembley during the 80's and 90's, very entertaining!
