For anybody brought up in 60s/70s Liverpool, you’re probably aware that Aussie White‘s wine was a staple drink of the dockers community. I was introduced to it when I started playing open-age footy. It was only available in Yates Wine Lodge. In those days, Yates’ had sawdust on the floor and the drink itself was thick as syrup but carried plenty of ooooooph.

As the Wine Lodge became trendy to appeal to the masses, so did the drink. Aussie Whites became more refined with much less oooooomph, but it‘s still Aussie Whites.

i stocked up at Christmas but ahead of a planned ‘session’ at the weekend, I need some more but I can’t get it anywhere. It’s disappeared.

Aussie Whites might be endangered, it needs to be protected, it needs to be preserved. This is serious stuff, if you know of a supply or see any on your travels, please post.

Morrisons ? ( watch out for stadium jackets in the car park )

I know Asda do their own version.

OMG! Disturbing mental images of being unable to stand up or speak in Yates Wine Lodge, then throwing up outside ( I am a very classy bird!) circa 1980 after a few Aussie Whites. Never been near the stuff since!

...we actually had it for the ‘toast’ at my son’s fancy wedding a few years ago. When we first introduced it to his wife-to-be, she went into an off-licence near her parents house in Formby and was told; ‘we don’t sell that, it’s what the plonkies in Liverpool drink.’

Christ, Yates Wine Bar brings up (not literally) some memories from my first trip to the city back in October 1990. All I remember is the Southport line was closed down (I was staying at my dad's cousin's in Crosby), decided to have a pint in some nice pub right by the Central station, meeting a couple of Evertonians, and being taken to a Yates before one of them dropped me off in Crosby about eight hours late. Needless to say, people on both sides of the Atlantic were freaking out by then.
