With regard to the career advisors thread and references to Health and Safety I feel that I should start another thread

A young lad wants to pursue a career in Health and Safety and good on him.

So he posts for some advice / help.

However then come the flippant anti Health and Safety comments. These people should hold their heads in shame as some of the comments are quite pathetic

I have worked in health and safety for nearly 20 years and unfortunately have seen the effects of Health and Safety not being taken seriously where employers seriously don't give a [Poor language removed] ( deaths, major injuries, long term ill health)

PI used to work in Liverpool as a Health and Safety advisor by the way and still work there now as I have a number of clients I advise

Keith Lard has stigmatised the whole industry. An aye agreed its a great thing Nev making the workplace safer for everyone, some good work done.

I think most people's problem is when its taken too far to the point where it interferes with trying to just do your job normally. But that's not the Health and Safety bods fault, its just knobheads in general taking it too far including companies.

Would help if people stopped suing for things which aren't all that like.

Surely peoples idea of Health and safety would vary drastically. I work in the NHS so the training we get is how to carry a box. Where as if you work in a dangerous environment the H+S people would be worth every penny.

Do you wear a hard hat and carry a clipboard Nev?

My first summer job was working for the civil service in Bootle on their database to track injuries/deaths at workplaces.

Not only was it employers who could put their employees at risk but employees themselves - tree surgeons who sawed off the limb they were sitting on without having a safety harness attached to another branch was a common one IIRC. You would think it was something too bleeding obvious to have to tell someone but better safe than sorry.

Oh come on Nev...... You wanna hug ?

I run manufacturing companies in countries with no regard for health and safety, it scares the life out of me what people will do with good intent, yet ignorant of the dangers they place themselves in.

We purchased a load of safety guards for machines in a saw mill, firstly no-one would fit the guards and then secondly after they were fitted they would be removed as "it slowed production down"...

Think it all depends on what industry where talking about with H&S nev, being pretty much an admin worker all my life, the kind of health and safety lectures/training we used to get was a waste of time for anyone with a brain, plus a bit like the way the IT department gets stereotyped as nerd etc, the H&S people get stereotyped as being a bit boring like, not right like just how it is, if i worked in a nuclear power plant though my view on H&S would probably be a lot more respectful

I regularly work on oil rigs or on mine sites. Health and safety is what prevents piper alpha happening every year. Although, having a procedure for how to sit on a stool is a bit ott
