Have you ever won anything?

It's not a competition in the strictest sense, but my proudest win was at a high school charity day, one of those things where classes run stalls to make a bit of cash. I was in the first year so 11ish, and at the time absolutely loved Streetfighter II, which I may have had on the SNES at that point. Anyway, one class of older lads had a console and was taking a quid or whatever for a go, I didn't have any money so was just happily watching the fights. One guy who was a game down (playing as Chun Li) suddenly had to leave so looked around and passed me the controller, suddenly there I am, a tiny year 7 playing against a year 11 lad already 1-0 up, with all his mates watching on.

I was never even a massive Chun Li player (always just played as Ryu) but I did know that she could jump off the back of the playing area and I knew how to do her special moves.... and so I somehow managed two victories over this big year 11 lad who had to sit there and take the mockery of his mates. Sadly I didn't have a pound to carry on playing.

The love of my wife, oh and the egg and spoon race when I was 11 and the picture of me winning on the back page of the Liverpool Pink Football Echo…..proper superstar……..
True story this, when I managed the local team around here we got to the league cup final against a team who were hot favourites, I had to give interviews to non other than the Daily Post … it was a big if an eye opener really as if you were to google my name now there’s a few things on the internet for anyone to see … but scary that.

We won the cup final though, incase you were wondering

The faculty 'excellence' prize when I graduated. Still not entirely sure what for. Being least dim in my cohort? Showing up to lectures? Pity?
I got a similar award in English at my high school.
What makes me laugh thinking about it is that I was a much better student in Maths and History (in which I did not receive awards), and in English I was a genuinely poor student who made a point of never, ever reading the assigned books. In lessons I would just look at summaries and improvise on exams, essays, and discussions. The year I graduated, I did make an exception for Pride and Prejudice because I wanted to prove to myself before going off to uni that I could actually get through a book I had no interest whatsoever in. Other than that, though, I never read more than a paragraph's worth of any chapter of the assigned reading for the entire time through high school, and they gave me an excellence award in the subject. Also in year 10 we had a major project where we had to write a poetry collection, and I intentionally turned in gibberish for mine!

On the general point of the thread, additionally:
  • I have coached two different middle school basketball teams that won their respective leagues
  • Once in the school staff bingo I won both a minor prize (an air fryer) and the major prize (a 50 inch TV, which I got rid of my 42 inch TV to mount, then later ended up completely dying a week after the warranty ended)

Won ( or lost ) 2 tickets for an Everton game v Sheffield United back in mid 70's, drew 1 each ! Hospitality at 3 different race meetings over the years when newspapers did postcard only comps.
Biggest gambling wins and not for massive stakes either,
Irish lottery - £1200
Footy bet - £2,500, a few days before a lads holiday to Benidorm, very messy.
Gee gees- 5k on a placepot me and a mate shared.
Ex Mrs got 5 numbers on the lottery, got just over 3k on a week when jackpot wasn't won. Happy she won and we had a nice holiday out of it but was left thinking for ages that 1 more number would have changed our lives. But would I have been happier?.........too bloody right I would!!

A signed Mikel Arteta picture when I was about 13 for winning the weekly “guess the score” they used to do on the Everton website.

He left about 3 months later so it went in the bin.

Won a draw outside the theatre for the opportunity to pay £20 each for centre front row tickets for the Book of Mormon. Amazing show. Same day as we went back to Vicarage Road to watch us lose 3-2.

A few quizzes, the odd Warhammer tournament, a few drawing competitions when I was younger. The only athletic thing I won when I was young was a bronze medal, though the race had 3 people.
