I had a green One 2 One goalkeeper kit around about 2000-2002 when I was in secondary school. I accidentally left it and the rest of my PE kit in the changing rooms and when I went back a few hours later the whole lot had been nicked. Serves me right for going to school in Wallasey I suppose.

The former Wales international couldn’t wear the standard green Everton goalkeeping shirt due to their opponents wearing that colour.

And he maintains the red option was thrust upon him.

“It was a great night although the only thing I get stick for is that shirt,” he says.

“I never get told I played well in that game it’s just ‘why did you wear a red shirt?’ Not thanks or anything!

“I had to wear it though.

“It wasn’t by choice – it was European rules. I couldn’t wear yellow because it was an international colour or black because the referee wore it or even white. It was the only option.

“It was weird to win something in red but we won it and that’s the main thing.”
