It's not the fans who have lost their passion. We all love this club, it really is rooted deep within. However, we express it accordingly in response to what we get in return. We demand and expect the same passion on the pitch. When we don't get that, it begins to feel like we're just flogging a dead horse, albeit passionately! Being an Everton fan would not be as frustrating as it is if we didn't have passion. As fans, all we can do is express our passion through vocal support in numbers. The rest is up to the players.
As for the players, they need to be seen to be playing with passion, like giving it their all, challenging for every ball, showing grit, never giving up and always working for each other. Some people blame the money for taking the passion out of the players, well, the money is not going to go away any time soon. So, the only way you are going to drum up passion in a squad these days is to force competition for places. It is no coincidence that the teams with the big squads have more success and this is not just about providing cover. Players want to play, especially the more competitive ones, the ones who care about their career. First team selection is the only pressure a manager can apply. Unfortunately, our squad is as depleted as their passion. We really need to spend big, shake up the dressing room and sort out the worthy from the worthless. Only then will you see some semblance of passion return to the field.
