They never got near the middle. Most were got in the concourse just after the turnstiles in the far corner of the St.end /Bullens area. Very early before 2 o'clock.
Although l was at the game didn't get on to just before kick off so must admit to only reading about it the next day. Soz if my recollections are hazy but that is how l recall the news report which was front page headlines. Sad days irrespective but you lived by the sword then you expected to die by the sword in those times and Millwall got little sympathy from the 'jolly old Scousers' that day.

I was at the game and unfortunately right in the middle of it aged about 9 sitting on a barrier as it went on around me, Millwall came in below and smacked some Everton lad downstairs , then came up onto the lower bit of the St. End to the right, the lad who had been hit and most of the lads from the middle got stuck into them, Millwall had nowhere to go, few of them were having a decent go back, one stocky Blonde fella in particular seemed to be in the thick of it for them, trust him to be right in front of me, didn't really last that long but seemed ages for me, they ended up getting a terrible hiding, one of them tried to climb up the boys pen fences into the stand, he made it only for the fans up there to get into him, he tried to get down away from them and was stabbed a few times in the legs as he hung down I was in total shock watching this , he was one of a number that day that left on a stretcher , frightening times for a young kid.
only others that came in there were Leeds who got legged as soon as the got in, went into the parkend got ran out of there, and ended up in the paddock, so had been in 3 sides of the ground in about a 10 minute spell.
Rangers , tommy wrights testimonial , don't honestly know how this myth started, they never made it onto the St End, didn't even try in all honesty, just a couple of drunk jocks at the back of stairs were the Everton kids were singing all the kids ran to the front of the terrace, the older Everton fans !6 yrs upwards ran after the jocks and webbed them all over the place on the stairs going up to the upper St End, not a good start to watching the blues as a kid seeing all that.
think we played Aldershot or Colchester and they played Grimsby one year in the cup at the same time kickoff.
Stoke v us, Palace v them, and I am sure there were a few more.

dannyboy, thanks for that link, in it is a nice piece about Ashley Cole, all of his first hundred caps for England where from the start of the game, bit different from the likes of Beckham and co. When he was getting a lot of caps with little twenty minute cameos, same as a few other players.
