I find it incredibly difficult call whether a youngster will go far these days, or end up at Chester or somewhere.
Problem is they seem to mature at different ages. Ryan Ledson, for example, looked a world beater at 17, captaining England to Euro glory and getting his first senior start in the Europa league. Two years on and he was considered 5/6th choice in his position within the development squad, and moved on.

Every now and then you get players coming through who you know, just know, are going to be top drawer. Over the years you've had the likes of Fowler, Owen, Joe Cole, Rooney, Bale, Wilshire, Luke Shaw and perhaps even Barkley. But these are very infrequent and, with the exception of Barkley, (due to a badly timed serious injury) were getting pretty regular first team football at 17/18.

It's always been difficult to call and always will be.

I think its harder than ever... or maybe its harder to break through? I prided myself on calling a first team player early with a mate of mine, as much as I like many there are some key milestones I feel we need to see before you can call a first teamer... That's why I knew Hope wouldn't make it, had my reservations on Green even and haven't called little Liam Walsh yet.. But Ledson ticked every box - Capt England U17, best player in his age group at the time, playing with boys 4 years older than himself at Everton.. and it went South so fast. Still a mystery.

Suppose it depends on the player as well. They don't necessarily wan't to play reserve team football into their 20's. I'm sure Mcaleny must now be wondering whether it would have been a better option for him to move like Ledson has done. Instead he's drifted into his early 20's and has no chance of ever making the first team.

I'd be surprised if Charsley made it at Everton. He was playing for the reserves at 16 and looked a real prospect but didn't really kick on in the next 4 years, partly due to lads around him overtaking him. In many ways a similar story to Ledson.

Seems to have had a new lease of life so far this season though and does have an eye for a goal. I just don't think he is quick or big enough but best of luck to him.

Charsley reminds me of Hibbert, not particularly rated by anyone, not the very best but always seems to be effective, scores goals, does a job for the team.
A players player more than a fans player.
