9.10am, 11th August 1968 a Brittania Class locomotive 70013 Oliver Cromwell left Lime St for Carlisle and returned via Manchester travelling along those same tracks to arrive in Lime Street at 7.00pm
This was the last official British Railways steam journey.
The Age of Steam was over.

There is still a daily steam train between Fort William and Mallaig.

Once saw a documentary about this that alleged that the failure of the runner up locomotive ‘Sans Pareil’, was an early case of industrial sabotage. A better performer than the eventual winner ‘Rocket’, it failed on its final run due to a cracked cylinder. The cylinder was cast at the factory of one George Stephenson, the eventual winner and owner of Rocket.

Glenfinnan Viaduct (below) is such a pretty spot to watch it go past, but even that gets busy. (mainly with over excited Americans lol)

It used to go right past my house before I emigrated. Have a couple of friends that still work on it.
