Played mate.

I had a proper refund a few years back. No Email, just a letter. In a white envelope not a brown one!

I've had a nightmare with them a few years back over been on the wrong tax code and they thought I had two company cars one year as well.

Got a letter from them and straight away I want to my folder of correspondence with them ready for an argument. How relieved was I when I had overpaid and they owed me 78 quid.

When the refund comes through, my great uncle just died, leaving me a fortune which I would be happy to split 50:50 if you send on your HMRC winnings for me to bribe the official in the Probate Registry who's holding it all up.

Honest.....

My HMRC refund is already spent helping out a CEO of a Nigerian bank who needs my help in getting 60 billion out of the country.

Soz...

I have always been quite pleasantly surprised when I have had reason to speak to HMRC or the NI bit.

Once you get through that is. And the Gateway system is pretty good to use, for a Govt web site that is.

But my tax and NI issues aint exactly Amazon levels of complexity!

That Microsoft one is still on the go as well.

They call your home number and tell you they're from Microsoft and that they need to remote in on your computer.
I had them on the phone for 5 minutes or so, just acting daft with them and then told them I was fraud squad, they hung up.

Just closed an aspect enquiry today.
Taken a month for what was sorted in about 2 hours chatting to HMRC and half an hour to the accountant that screwed up the PAYE.

Generally they're OK on the helplines as far as they can go. Agent helpline is excellent.

I've only ever received a letter form HMRC notifying me of any rebate. Had an email a few years back form HMRC in Preston! Telling me to give my details and they'll put my cash in the bank. I told them I wanted a big cardboard cheque like the spot the ball winners used to get...I didn't get a reply! Funnily enough, at the time, there was no HMRC in Preston. I knew this as my old company was 5 minutes away from the genuine one in Stockport.
They'll never send you an email but nowadays don't send cheques. You just register online and receive the money in about 10 days

Stay safe out there kids.

There was a tits up in work a few years back and loads of people got money given to them in tax and I don't think they ever paid it back in the end.

I missed out because I had moved contracts at the time but everyone got like 200 quid rebate back and the tax office had no idea how to reclaim it back of people

There was (and possibly still is) a Preston HMRC office. Been in it.

Edit. Deals with Tax Credits since about 2014 ish.
