He is one of my favourites. So are Hank Williams, Gram Parsons and the King and Queen of country, George Jones and Tammy Wynette.

Who are yours?

the problem with Johnny Cash is thatthe film 'walk the line' made his life seem so dull that I now think he was boring. However, the above picture has restored my faith in him somewhat. Not a fan of the music though

If you want country, try The Eagles when Bernie Leadon was still with them (not taking away from Joe Walsh though - he's excellent for other genres).

The first 2 Eagles albums are/where superb. Leadon was a great musician. I saw them at Liverpool Empire supporting Neil Young in 1973 and was blown away by them. Also Mannassas produced one of the great country and rock records ever with their debut double album. The great Chris Hillman (ex Byrds/Burritos) was a great influence on that record as well as Stephen Still's own country leanings. 'Sweetheart Of The Rodeo' by The Byrds/Dylan's 'Nasville Skyline' great examples of the rock into country crossover. The Dillards...Poco...then the L.A singer songwriter's like JD Souther and Jackson Browne all for me were the best way to show the country leanings. Cash made an awful lot of absolutely dreadful turgid albums until near the end when suddenly everyone started to 'get' him when the end was in sight .as forever happens

Grouchoesque fact of the day.

Waylon Jennings was a 19 year old bass player with Buddy Holly's group, 'The Crickets'. On that fateful day he was due to fly with the rest of the band for the gig. However, 'The Big Bopper', who was going to drive to the gig with his band, had a cold. Young Waylon kindly gave up his seat on the plane to the Big Bopper.
Jennings went on to be a founder of the 'Oulaw' country scene along with Willie Nelson and Kris Kristoffeson.
