Gosling injury March 2010? So Rathbone left two months later...
He owed himself first.
He had two choices.
1) Hope his injury doesn't end his career (or severely limit it) and wait on a contract from Everton.
2) Sign a 25k a week/4 year deal/signing on fee elsewhere
It's rare, but on this occasion I have it on good authority that we were waiting on his fitness before committing to any offer. I've said all this before, and it proved sensible from the club, it plagued him since - justifying his decision if anything. At least he got one big pay day before ending up at the Bournemouth's of the world.

The Rathbone thing, it was the way the posters above worded it. I thought they meant Rathbone left after Gosling, which is why I posted that.

I can see what you're saying, but I can see it from the club's perspective too. They gave a kid a chance, stood by him, he hadn't really played that many matches to really justify him more than tripling his weekly wage at that point, especially as he was going to be out at least half the following season.

There's absolutely no doubting the fact he left for more money. Whether he would have done that, had he not been injured, remains to be seen.

I wonder if he regrets it all now?

If anyone feels sorry for this lad then I really think you need to think about what he's earned so far as a footballer. And what exactly he brought to Everton when he played for us? Was he exciting, gifted, skillfull, quick? Nope. He is a millionaire, from being a really average player. He scored a goal in a cup derby yes but it was a fluke

File under not assed.

Gosling will always be remembered for that goal against Liverpool. His career has gone the way it has because I think he let the wrong people influence him and made decisions thinking only of the short-term. Maybe this story about us not offering him a decent contract is true, but at the time we didn't have many players on big contracts anyway. Wasn't Yakubu or something our top earner at about £50,000 per week I think?

He suffered cruciate ligament damage, I find it very hard to believe that the club's medical staff at the time didn't realise that, it's such a serious injury. The lad did what he thought was best for himself at the time which is understandable, but he definitely showed a lack of grace in leaving. If he didn't like the offer we made him him he could have just refused it and sat what was left of his contract out. Taking us to court to so he could get out early (and ensuring we'd make no money from any future sale of him despite mostly developing him) left a sour taste. The ruling meant Plymouth, his first club, couldn't make any money on him either, in a season when they went into administration. Poor form all round.

He wasn't even very good IMO. If he hadn't of binned us off, then I'm certain we would of binned him off eventually.

It's made no difference to us. It's ruined his career.

Hope he gets a championship club willing to take a risk on him and he gets to play some football. If not and he never played football again, he's a lucky boy earning what he has out of limited ability.

Although his Liverpool goal I will always remember fondly. He's like whigfield...A one hit wonder!

Now he has left Newcastle, as the best to him for the rest of his career.

We will never forget him, as he scored that last minute goal against RS

I'd have done the same thing as Gosling.

I suspect the vast majority on here would have done too.

We would only offer him a deal if he recovered to our satisfaction from his career threatening injury - an injury the Clubs professionals aggravated.

The lad invested his life into football, and had very genuine doubts over his future. Newcastle offered him a deal/mortgage paid off and more - the offer of regular football in his preferred position.

if we're talking as a neutral possible, i doubt the vast majority on here would have left their dream to play for everton to move to bloody newcastle ha. shame on yous if you would.

This is going in the right direction. He is playing in a mid-table Championship side next season. In a couple of years, he might even play in a League 1 team.
