Gordon McQueen slags off McGeady & McCarthy

That's why I used the term dog whistle. It's 'inaudible' to all but those sensitively tuned in to hearing it...and desperately wanting to hear it.

McQueen cant possibly be as stupid as he looks. He knows that questioning the right of Scots with Irish heritage to legitimately identify with Ireland plays right into the hands of forces who tout ethic and religious division. Most Scots who have Irish heritage are fully integrated into Scotland and identify with Scotland...they are a generations settled community so of course most now feel Scottish. By banging on about these two players and others like them, who represent a minority of Scots-Irish, he places a question mark over that integration and underscores divisions.

Bottom line is that these two players have made their individual/family choice, and it should be respected and not used as a stick to beat them with. That big gob$hite McQueen should have more sense than whip stuff up like this.

I suppose you are talking about these bands of sectarian bigots

Unfortunately Ireland still has the highest levels of emigration in Europe and has done for a long time now. Of course some of our expats are going to have families that still identify strongly with Ireland. If any of the kids of my many friends that have left wanted to play for us I can't see how people could begrudge them that.

Oh, people will always find a way to begrudge, Sean....don't worry 'bout that.

But in the immortal words of Rick Nelson, you can't please everyone so you better just please yourself ;)

Scottish Everton fan here...what McQueen said is just utterly embarrassing. The fact is actually, we could've had both McCarthy and McGeady in the current Scotland squad had it not been for the completely useless Scottish FA. In their early days, the SFA just somehow (unsurprisingly) didn't see any potential in either of them. That's when Ireland stepped in and offered them both to play for Ireland instead and you just can't blame them both for doing so. A catastrophic error from our point of view...anyhoo looking forward to the game on Friday. Should be an absolute cracker. Please don't make me hate you Seamus Coleman; you're my favourite player.

They were both called up by Scotland at a relatively young age though. The lads wanted to play for Ireland end of story. As young Celtic fans they would have been brought up with a connection to Ireland, going to games surrounded by tricolours and Irish songs etc. I think that this would have more influence than the tedious link to the country through their grandparents.

This. Well said. In McGeadys case Celtic didnt allow youngsters to train with scottish school teams as well as them due to training n playing time clashes while scottish schools did little to comprimise afaik. So the FAI became aware of this n called him into the U15 set up. When the SFA came calling a few years later he said thanks but no thanks as he was settled in Irish set up. As for Hamez, they just didnt seem bothered but the FAI were on the ball and he only ever wanted to play for us at all levels.
Hardly a Vinny Jones playing for Wales
or that jamacian lad who wore tights playing for england lol!

Typical comment from an ex player who didn't bother engaging his brain has he even lived in Scotland recently ? I've grown up following Scotland & Northern Ireland & can understand why they made their choice. The SFA has consistently been a barrier to a winning side with their archaic establishment attitudes look at Big Duncan he turned his back on Scotland after representing them & he was a Rangers player.

Why would anyone hate Scotland because of some idiot comments from Mcqueen?

Anyone who would would be as stupid as McQueen is

This notion that these players chose Ireland because of red tape with the Scottish system is a load of rubbish. They chose to play for Ireland at a young age because of influence at home from their families and at School where they were surrounded by a high proportion of Celtic supporting Catholics. It's not difficult to see why they made their decision but to blame the Scottish system is wrong.

Naismith was called up by Wales as a youngster as his father was born in Wales, he chose Scotland thankfully.
