Along with the lessons and the basics you will learn, I would emphasize one major point. Balance.

Notice how all of the professionals finish their swings with balance, weight on their left side, hips facing the target. You need to be able to consistently get to that finish position and hold that position until the ball has landed. Otherwise, your balance is not what it ought to be.

By the way, I carded my first hole-in-one this past weekend in San Antonio and I've been playing almost 40 years. The game can be addictive and maddening but there is always hope of that perfect shot. Good luck and have fun.

Which course?

And I'm surprised you were able to play with all the rain. Did it let up?

Lessons are a must especially for a true beginner. Get started properly.

Next bit of advice - play consistently. No matter how good you may be, you need regular play to be consistent with your yardages and shots. Enjoy going to the range and whacking a bucket or two. Take your wedge or 9 iron and go hit them both regularly. Once you can hit those two clubs consistently, the other irons will fall into line. Same swing just the positioning of your stance in relation to the ball changes.

Get in. Been at it for almost 20 years and no aces - a lip out and hit the stick in the air but no aces. Jealous.

I HAD a 12 handicap. Haven't played in years though so i would probably stink now. I've had 2 holes in one in my life though. 1 unbelievably was the first time i had played a proper course.

"A good walk spoilt" ....so said Oscar Wilde? Well some dude said it...and I happen to agree

*ducks and runs for cover*

Believe it was Churchill actually...

Regardless, I live in a metropolis with over 200 golf courses so I partake in it from time to time. It's nothing serious though and I've never taken lessons...it's mainly just about getting out.

We stayed 3 nights at La Cantera. I played the Resort course because it used to host the Texas Open and the pro shop said it was more forgiving than the Palmer. I used to be about a 12 but have only played about 4 times in the last 2 years. I can definitively say, work and is overrated. I could retire today if it weren't for the money thing.

Yes, there was rain on and off most of Thurs. Friday less, and Saturday had no rain when I played. The weather was perfect and I played as a single in about 3 hours. Perfect vacation round really. The wife did me a solid by taking the kids to Fiesta Texas.

I aced #13. A straightforward, 138 yarder, downhill into a mild but steady breeze. I was so shocked, that I took my putter out of the bag to go retrieve my ball even though I knew it was in. The foursome in front of me vouched for the ace since they were on the next tee box. I think the ace was God's way of saying that the missus should always take the kids to amusement parks solo while I play golf. I'll let you know if I find my teeth.

the trick to getting good loft when you tee off is to imagine there is another ball infront of the ball that you are aiming for, and then follow through into your swing which allows the loft that the drive needs. Also if you are playing and the course is extremely windy a good tip is to use a method known as a 'punch shot' which is where you would use a club such as a 3 iron but only do half a swing and then follow through the ball which keeps the ball about waist height but it still goes pretty far.
