Player Valuation: £40m
The last time we won the league our top goalscorers were:

Heath 16
Steven 15
Sheedy 15
Sharp 12

The top goalscorers for the current league challengers are:

United
Rooney 33
Berbatov 10
Owen 9
Scholes 6
Valencia 6

Chelsea
Drogba 30
Lampard 17
Anelka 12
Malouda 11

Arsenal
Fabregas 18
Arshavin 11
Bendtner 9
Van Persie 8
Vermaelen 8
Diaby 7
Eduardo 7

That compares to us with:

Saha 15
Cahill 7
Pienaar 7
Bily 5
Arteta 4
Osman 4
Rodwell 4
Yakubu 4

I'm sure that Moyes is actively working on improving our goal output. Pienaar and Arteta especially have been finding the back of the net on a much more regular basis. He's made mention to the fact that our centre backs don't score enough goals too. It is a comparative rarity for someone like Jags or Distin to get on the end of a set piece.

If we really are going to make the step up to compete for a Champion's League place then either the team collectively needs to be scoring more goals or we need to invest in a prolific striker. In an ideal world it would be a combination of the two.

Our conversion rate is actually very good. We had 3 shots on target and three shots off target last night to score 2 goals. The average in top class football is 4 shots on target and four shots off target to score 1 goal!

We will score more if we shoot more often. How often do you see an Everton goalscorer on MOTD finding the back of the net from a blockbuster outside the box?! Shooting from distance is one tactic that we should make better use of for breaking down stubborn defences.

I think the idea is to score more goals than the other team, so it doesnt matter how many goals you score, you have to stop them scoring more than you, fairly sure thats how football works. Stop me if im wrong tho.

Dont concede + score goals = win games

Dont like having to resort to pot shots from outside the box just to get on motd.

Heathy scored 11 league goals and 15 altogether that season.

We've drawn 9 games this season. If we were scoring more goals, that could have been another 9 wins.

Even in the days of 'boring, boring Arsenal' and their typical 1-0 scoreline, their top goalscorers were as so:

Smith 25
Merson 14
Marwood 10
Thomas 7
Rocastle 7

So what you saying is, instead of playing neat tidy football, we should be smashing them from the half way line?

86-87 was a weird season with a lack of cohesion due to lots of injuries, I'm not quite sure how we won that league but we did, I'm sure United will be feeling similar if they win the Prem this season.

We've scored a few from outside the box this season if I'm right and that's not bad figures from Saha who has missed quite a few games, if Yakubu was fit on form then that might read differently. Even Arteta, who now has four goals to his name despite being back for not too long.

Not at all. I'm saying that we'll win more games if we score more goals and that set pieces and shooting from distance are two means of goalscoring that we don't take enough advantage of.

I can't find the actual stats readily, but I would expect that United, Chelsea and Arsenal have all scored many more goals than us from outside the area. Ronaldo scored 6 himself last season. I'd be hard pushed to think of 6 that we've scored from outside the box this term.

Being able to vary our play and to score in different ways will give us an extra edge in tight games, rather than detract from what we do already that is working.

Re-check your stats on goals outside the box and set pieces lid, I don't think we is all that bad.

I have been known to be wrong like. Like loads.

Bundy, it could be a bit of both. United and Chelsea have players in Rooney and Drogba who are capable of scoring 30+ goals a season and who can create a chance out of nothing. The trouble is that players who can do that on a regular basis are few and far between and tend to cost £30m or more.

The other issue is that teams tend to become over-reliant on them. If they become injured, lose form or are well man-marked, the whole team can stop functioning.

We had Lineker in 85-86 who couldn't stop scoring, but we won nothing. Either side of that, the rest of the team chipped in with more goals and we were league champions.

Arsenal follow the latter approach. Unless we're very fortunate and Joao or Beckford turn out to be world beaters, it will be the same for us too.

The teams at the top of the league have scored 50% more goals than us. That's no coincidence. If we want to break into the elite, then we're going to need to find the back of the net more regularly.

Our pattern of play can make it difficult, as we don't generally commit that many men forward. It's been encouraging to see Baines and Neville getting forward more often in recent matches. That seems to be a clear instruction from the management.

We need to take advantage of whatever weapons we have at our disposal to gain that extra edge in tight matches. If we get the ball close to the opposition penalty area, we need to have the courage to shoot, rather than always looking to thread the ball through and getting behind the back.
