Player Valuation: £70m
I've noticed more and more conversations about goalies on here clogging up other threads so thought as chat about them seems to be on the increase of late a thread about goalies seems a viable option.

This is an opportunity to talk about goalies of the present and the past, all things calamitous (Karius) and great (Nev).

I'll kick it off by asking, why is it that we see so many goalies these days palm shots, often straight to a striker presenting a perfect opportunity to score.I can appreciate that the modern football moves in the air a lot more but you rarely see goalies these days saving a shot and actually keeping hold of the ball, it frustrates me no end.

For the record I consider big Nev as the best goalie I have personally seen and I think De Gea is probably the best of the bunch about at the moment.

I believe that Pickford will keep on improving and is smart enough and good enough to learn from his mistakes.

Goalies to me are like the drummers in bands, loose cannons who are often lunatics.

The mistakes goalies make are often more critical than outfield players mishaps, the great ones show character and respond positively to criticism the weaker ones can disappear without trace if dropped.

Goalies please discuss.........

I agree about the failure to keep hold of the ball. It does my head in too. Obvioulsy a lot of it is to play to the grandstand. I think though that the change in the PL to GKs from Europe and South America especially has embedded this horrendous practice.

That said, that oaf we have in goal would have been doing us a favour by punching rather than trying to catch on Sunday.

They palm the ball and make mistakes simply because modern football isn't as great as the media who sell the myth says it is.

Goalies aren't necessarily any better than 20 years age just because they're paid a kings ransom - in fact I'd say the quality has plummeted.

Statistically it's better to palm away to the side rather than try and hold onto it. Less goals are conceded from a push or punch away than when Tim Howard tries to catch it.

Southall
Schmeichel
Buffon

The 3 best I've ever seen. As said above they never catch shots these days due to the ball moving around as much as those flyaway things you bought from newsagents in the seventies!

No world class keepers around at the moment. DeGea before this season would have been the closest.
