Cels

Player Valuation: £70m
What's the deal with our young Goalkeepers? We're had plenty decent young outfield players coming through the youth system over the years, but I don't recall us having any decent young keepers breaking (or nearly breaking) through the ranks. Obviously being a keeper is more difficult in the respect that there is only that one position in the team. I did put this out there on Twitter but received nothing back.

I think it's the maths like you say.
Say you've got a squad of 20 for the U23s and 1 in 20 per generation is good enough to come through and play for the 1st team.
You'll be waiting a long time for that 1 in 20 player to be the keeper.

Because being a boss goalkeeper isn't as easy as scoribg a load of goals or making a few tackles in a team unit.

It's the most skilled role on the whole pitch, so it is understandable not everyone can be world class in that role.

And to be honest do we want to churn out brilliant goalkeepers? We have one already in the team and any others would be sat in the bench wanting to leave so it's counter productive. There is a reason why even the top club's have some experienced back up rather than another top goalkeeper waiting in the wings.

..I think historically it’s been very rare for young goalkeepers to break through because they mature old. Clubs release them and they eventyally find their level. I can only think of Jason Kearton and Drew Brand who played a few first team games.

That trend might be changing with the likes of Pickford and Butland coming through at younger ages.

Because ideally he won't need to play much this season

Name 3 club's who have a top GK just as back up? Or name 3 top club's who have an academy keeper?

(Not asking you mate, just generally)

Clubs usually don’t want to nurture a young goalie and have them as a liability if they don’t have to. Much easier to buy the finished article
