Giving up smoking...

Today I entered my second year as an ex-smoker. Haven't had so much as a drag for over a year now.

Good for you! I have to admit after a couple years I've had a couple smokes in the last month (like 2 cigs). But I will tell you I will never go back to being a regular or even semi-regular smoker. I miss it sometimes, but not enough to go back.

Went cold turkey 2 months ago. Apart from a couple of sessions on the green when I've been to see certain mates I've not smoked.

It sucks, to be quite honest. I've put on pounds and I don't feel any healthier.

Half thinking of taking it up again at the moment, quite frankly.

Top marks mate. I know myself how tough it is, I switched to golden vadge years ago thinking I'd never be arsed to make my own... I can now roll whilst driving with either hand.

Bah.

I've put on more than a few pounds myself but I do feel much healthier. Give it time - don't cave in.

Hope you made a full recovery.

Pleased to report that after having spent the best part of 30 years smoking I quit at the end of January and not had one since.

I'd tried many times before and failed, so this time I went to the docs and the gave me a drug called Champix.
What it does it placates the receptors in your brain that crave nicotine.
You start taking them 2 weeks before you give up and then continue with them for a couple of Months
They're brilliant, you still have to have will power but I found it far easier this time.
Today is the first day without the pills and apart from reading this I've not give it a thought. I know it's early days but it's saving me an absolute fortune and I'm determined not to go back

There are some side effects, they give you some bizarre dreams and can make you poo irregularly but when you do go its a momentous occasion.

Erm yeah anyway, if anyone else is struggling to quit I'd recommend this drug

My doctor told me it takes the average person 7 times of trying to quite before they do it, so don't give up anyone. Of course some get it the first time and others take 15 times. But it can be done. My old man quit cold turkey after 40 years of 3 pack a day smoking. It can be done. The last time for me was actually easy when the other times were a struggle and I didn't make it. All I can tell you is it's hard to do right up until the time you try it again and all of a sudden it isn't. For me, it was the loss of a job and mentally I couldn't justify spending money on cigarettes instead of food. Once I made that decision in my head it was easy.

Congrats to all! I used to volunteer in a methadone clinic..... these folks had given up crack, meth, heroine, etc, but to a man said smoking was the hardest. Most still smoked.
As someone in healthcare, I can say it is THE best thing you can do for yourself, even if you gain some weight.

Hugs all 'round!
