A teenager has been arrested on suspicion of inciting religious hatred after allegedly burning an English language version of the Koran.
The 15-year-old, who lives in the West Midlands, allegedly posted the video, filmed two weeks ago on her school premises, on Facebook.
The video was reported to the school and subsequently removed, police said.
A 14-year-old boy was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of making threats. Both have been released on police bail.
It is thought the girl, who lives in the Sandwell Council area, was allegedly filmed setting the booklet alight while other pupils watched.
Two Facebook profiles have also been removed from the site, police added.
It is understood that the group who published that version of the Koran have since been to the school to talk to pupils.
'Sacred thing' Catherine Heseltine, chief executive officer of the Muslim Public Affairs Committee, said burning the Koran was one of the most offensive acts to Muslims that she could imagine.
She said: "The Koran is the most sacred thing to over a billion Muslims worldwide."
"You can see that in the way Muslims treat the Koran, washing before touching it and in many Muslim homes you will find it on the top shelf above all other books and we will never destroy the Koranic texts."
"We believe it is the word of God. God's guidance for us in this life," she added.
Bob Badham, Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council cabinet member for education, said he had visited the school and believed the atmosphere was generally good among pupils.
He added that he did not believe there was a "deeper problem" in the area.

hang on a second..........

I agree, burning a Holy book and posting it on facebook is not a clever thing to do. And she deserves to be punished.

but, what about the horrible Cunts who burned the Poppy's....???? Why not arrest them. I hate this fucking country.

Why double standards. Even more why side with muslims. It's not a Muslim country. Are we scared to be called racist. Fuck that, this country has gone to [Poor language removed].

Makes me so angry....

All i'll say to that is, watch how the EDL get's no front page and 2 page spread in the national media after they 'riot' in Preston tomorrow.

The burning of poppy's was a disgrace, but the media's bias to printing anti-muslim sentiments and not facist white sentiments is just as bad a disgrace imo

Lol are you bantering me sharpy? I read that and that pretty much word for word, is exactly what I would write.

If not fair play, I totally agree.

Burning poppies as part of a protest against war is not illegal.

Burning a copy of religious text is, as its deemed to incite religious hatred.

If somebody burns a holy book, videos it and it is reported the the police i'd say its standard procedure to arrest them on suspicion while any case against them is investigated.

Of course because it involves Muslims on the recieving end its automatically bending over backlwards to keep them happy isn't it.

Now sure, if its a case of the police rushing to arrest this girl just so no Muslims get upset i'll gladly side with you. So just get some proof of that and i'll be there. Cheers.

Two were arrested. They've been bailed and face their hearing next month.

Sure all that stuff may get burnt in other countries but thats got nothing to do with this case has it? Sharpie asked why the Muslims who burnt poppies in London a few weeks ago wern't arrested like this girl was. Because they didn't commit the same crime, if any that she did. And some fthem were arrested on the day of the protest.( I see Davek posted this above, but where they arrested for buring the poppies Dave do you know or was it just general public order offences?)

Show me a Muslim schoolchild on video burning a bible, an act which was reported to the police and then not acted on in the same way due to not wanting to upset Muslims and appear racist and i'll share your view.

This girl was an idiot. If any Muslim kid videos themselves burning a bible they are an idiot. Muslims who burnt the poppies were idiots.

I don't care about any religion, i think they are all bollocks. I had a right falling out with a Muslim guy i used to work with once when i told him so.

So scared of being called racist? Defending Islam? No chance, before Nik trots out that line again as he usually does when these subjects pop up. Replace Islam with any religion in this story and i'd say the same.

Just want to know what crime this girl is supposed to have committed ?In Britain as in Ireland Christianity is the major religion but a host of other religions are also present. Our countries offer people the right to follow any religion of their choice, state and religion can remain separate. This however is under threat in Ireland because our religious images have to be taken out of our hospitals and schools because they are offensive to other emerging religions.
Not exactly representative of the majority but then again the state dont wish to be seen as racist. Some other religions can be militant in their wish to spread their word.
The girl was not the brightest for what she did but what law did she actually break apart from a moral one

Found this elsewhere :

29A Meaning of “religious hatred”.In this Part “religious hatred” means hatred against a group of persons defined by reference to religious belief or lack of religious belief.

Acts intended to stir up religious hatred

29B Use of words or behaviour or display of written material.(

1) A person who uses threatening words or behaviour, or displays any written material which is threatening, is guilty of an offence if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred..

(2) An offence under this section may be committed in a public or a private place, except that no offence is committed where the words or behaviour are used, or the written material is displayed, by a person inside a dwelling and are not heard or seen except by other persons in that or another dwelling..

(3) A constable may arrest without warrant anyone he reasonably suspects is committing an offence under this section..

29E Distributing, showing or playing a recording.

(1) A person who distributes, or shows or plays, a recording of visual images or sounds which are threatening is guilty of an offence if he intends thereby to stir up religious hatred.. Snipped the quote for brevity. I think that the girl would have been arrested under the terms of sections 29A & 29B(1) as well as 29E(1)

Although I agree with cosmo that she was just being a silly 15 year old prat, the law would interpret her actions as inciting religious hatred.

I don't think anyone can argue that burning a copy of a religious book could be construed as a hateful act.

Of course she has only been arrested on "suspicion" so may well just be given a warning seeing as how its more likely to be a schoolkid being stupid as opposed to anything more serious.

Just seems to be alot of bother over a silly kid.People should just get on with life and not take everything so seriously.

Yeah i know exactly what you're getting at.

I don't actually know what would happen to you, but fine, i will assume that you are assuming you would be harshly dealt with if you went to Iran and burnt their flag.

And that you prefer that harsh punishment to what happens here, that people are allowed to burn poppies as a protest due to our belief in free speech.

Bare in mind i'm also assuming you wouldn't want Iran or Pakistans laws to be implemented in this country. Right?

You can be arrested in UAE(an Islamic state) for kissing or drinking in public (i believe). You don't think this country is a push over because you can get pissed and stagger home do you?

True. But its not exactly a lot of bother, rather than couple of arrests because they have to be investigated.

Common sense should say nothing more comes from it. But it has to be checked anyway, regardless of the religion of those involved.
