Gianfranco Zola

I've always found it interesting how badly goal stats can sometimes tell you the true story of a strikers skills. Like if you look at the goals per game ratio Cottee was miles better than either Ferguson or Campbell but I watched all three and he bloody wasn't.

By the same token Zola's goal to game ratio was about the same as Heskey's during the same period but anyone who watched the man had no doubt about his class. Some of his movement around the penalty area was just amazing.

That's an interesting point. I agree with you as well, although Zola wasn't a 'furthest man up the pitch' kind of striker, was he? More of a support striker/attacking midfielder/whatever you call that role ffs kind of player. So the focus on goals is a bit weaker and the focus on guile a bit greater. Unless you're Tim Cahill.

He's boss either way, like. Always seemed to be a sound fella as well.

Yeah, he was a number ten rather than number 9. And to be fair to him he scored loads in Italy, it was only at Chelsea when he became more of a creative player. But yeah he was just one of those players who just made the team better even when he wasn't scoring himself.

Lovely guy too, by all accounts, and a smile almost as good as the Yak's.

Legend. I'm proud to be sardinian like him. Quick, assistman, great free-kicks (his mentor was maradona at napoli) and a fantastic man. It's not the tipical italian footballer.

I saw him on Sky Sports when there were a load of press camped outside his home when he was given the boot by West Ham. He brought them all out tea and coffee and made sure they were all ok. Nice guy.
