I recently been to few places in Essex like Basildon, Billericay, Romford, etc and went to a lot of pubs, shops around the areas. I noticed that the people in these Essex areas tend to be more tanned than the average English people in other areas such as Merseyside, Manchester and the South. I saw a lot more darker features such as hair and eyes. I know Essex has the reputation of fake tanning but I noticed people in general, were darker than the average English, almost like Italian, Spanish, etc. People like David Gandy are from these areas. Also the footballer James Tomkins. So I was wondering, why do certain people in Essex look like this?

I'm currently watching Only Fools, Jolly Boys outing.. Margate.

Bet you it's full of fancy bars and tanning studios now though.

Here was your first mistake

When I moved south in 1969 I had my first visit to Essex when I played football for Maidenhead. Places like Grays Athletic and the worst place in the world - Tilbury. I decided never to go there again. Tilbury is out in the wilds of Essex. The view is over the marshes to the docks with a vista of cranes (not the bird). Tilbury was once a new town but was really run down.
Just digressing - After our game with Tilbury we got in the coach to drive back to Maidenhead. (No M25 in those days, you had to go through the middle of London). We had only just started when, at the first change of gear, the gear stick came off in the driver's hand. For a short time I had the nightmare of having to stay in Tilbury. The driver was brilliant. He found that by utilising a pair of pliers he could reach the remaining bit of the gear lever. He drove back through the centre of London, changing gear with the pliers the whole way. Took ages, but was better than staying in Tilbury!

Could say the same about Liverpool - alot of scouse girls imo have the same facial structure (and im not talking about the lip fillers and scouse brows).

I don't know why but I laughed so much at this.
Then again I would have the same nightmare about Neston.

The very, very short version; Many volumes condensed into 10 lines.

The UK was settled many times in many ways. Anybody claiming to English to the Core is kidding themselves.
Your average UK dweller is a mongrel, a mix of everybody that came here in the last 10,000+ yrs. - and all the better for it.

There were two main direction of travel into the UK, all very slow obviously.
Firstly in a general NW direction from the Euphrates, Anatolia, Turkey, Europe up the danube and rhine and onto the south and east coasts.
Second, via Spain and Brittany on to the S.W. and West coast.
All these people and their genes came from and through sunnier climes. Hence the brown skin.
The further away from original source the paler you will be...add in to that the influx in the North and NW of the pale ginger type and there you have it.

Edit; rains more up north too

Many folk in those parts of Essex are those from families who did well for themselves and moved out from the east end of London so are likely to be a complete mix of ethnic origins. We lived in and around Essex for a few years (including Billericay). My wife was in the position of recruiting (mostly as it turned out) young people for her firm in those places. She always speaks highly of those she worked with. Being hard working, honest and reliable was the norm. Much closer in attitude to northern folk than expected on many issues.

Several local differences were also apparent. Usually added to the enjoyment of living there...

Those are the worst parts of Essex. How about places like Brentwood, Billericay, Southend? These places are a cut above the places you listed and most places in North of England.

My wife has family who lived just east of Basildon (near Thundersley) and I've always found the people to be pleasant and hard working.
