Singed in the summer of 1998 from Italian club Perugla he was one of Walter Smith's first big name signings, Marco Matterazzi promised much but fulfilled very little during his time at Goodison Park. Touted as 'The Butcher' during his time at Italy, he seemed to fill the center back spot left by the aging Dave Watson perfectly. He was known for his tough tackling and his no-nonsense attitude.

During his time at Everton Marco Matterazzi made 25 league appearances and scored twice. Everton finished a dissapointing 14th in the league and Marco was on his way out of the club after alot of poor performances. He returned to Perugla for a cut price in the summer of 1999, only a year after leaving the club. It was then made public after leaving that Materazzi was only there because of the money offered by Everton as they tried to restore some pride after the previous season where they finished 17th (only scraping it by goal-difference).

Happier times came though as he made a big name for himself back in Italy and made a further 51 appearances and scoring 15 goals for Perugla and was eventually signed by giants Internazionale for a massive €10m in 2001. He later had great times at Inter as he won 5 Serie A titles, 4 Coppa Italia trophies and a Champions-league medal. Although not considered to be an Italian international at Everton, he later made 41 appearances for the Azzuri and won the World Cup in 2006.

He is now considered to be one of the greatest center backs in Inter Milan's history.

Next: Francis Jeffers.

I seem to remember he couldn't stay out of the referee's notebook...

Which fits pretty much every other half decent player we had at the time.

He was part of one of the coolest world cup moments of all time, don't lie. I still haven't decided if that was the saddest or bossest possible way for Zizou to bow out.

Plus one of only three Everton players to ever win the big one. One of the big missed opportunities that he never worked out here.

Nice idea for a series, mate. When will you get to Bilic?

After Jeffers I would imagine.

Bit harsh - I thought he was ok for us given the circumstances and it was a shame we couldnt have kept him - signing him and Dacourt gave the impression that PJ had money and we were going places - sadly hed borrowed it all and we had to pay it all back very shortly afterwards

Good point to be honest, it certainly didn't lower my opinion of him in any way. I suppose in an ideal world he would have scored the winner before the Big Dunc madness veil came over him. If you havent seen them check out the Zizou five a side videos on youtube. Sorry cant link from phone but they are mesmerising.

As sad as it is, that that moment of brutality became his legacy rather than all the beautiful football he played in that tournament, it's just such a badass way to end a career. Score the opening goal in the world cup final and then, just before penalties, flat out lay out some italian snide with a glasgow kiss and walk off the field with your head held high.

If Trezeguet could take a penalty, Zizou would have gone down in history as a Maradona style tempramental genius as opposed to the fancy dan sucker who Materazzi cynically took out of the game.

Nah mate his real legacy is untarnished I think, no matter what the media say. Ive got close French mates from Lille and iv been going over since late nineties and played footy for their local side and just smoking weed playin with local lads in underground carparks and they all idolise him like iv never seen with an English player, like Becks profile but without everyone calling him at ****. Of course this is just my experience fair enough if people disagree.

He was basically the centre back version of Duncan Ferguson I think if he was here for more than one season he would be in most peoples top 10 everton player of that era

Duncan would have got up and destroyed Zidane or have been sent off first probably. And I must have missed Duncan crying pitchside after getting sent off. I dont see the similarities im afraid mate.

Top player who would have been fantastic in his second season for us after adapting.

He also went flying into tackles in training which pissed Walter Smith off as he was concerned Materazzi would injure some of the younger players!!

Absolutely gutted when he left -- for the same price we paid for him too...

Id be interested to hear Michael Ball's views on Walter protecting injured young players.
