Gary Speed Appreciation thread

Gary Speed was a great Evertonian, a great player but more important he was a good, genuine Gentleman. Very badly
mistreated by Everton, a club he loved. He took the training many mornings when the manager wasn't available, to put it mildly, Evertonians, instead of booing Gary, should have asked themselves, why he had to sign a confidentially form in order to get his transfer away from Everton when in fact he was the injured party. Yes there was a phoney involved when
Gary left, it was most certainly NOT Gary Speed. To his credit Gary never uttered a word about the affair once he left
Everton.I think Gary will always be remembered with much affection by the majority of genuine Blues fans.
I'm sorry but I've heard this many times and I just don't believe it. the idea that HOward took the training in the first place every day is fanciful. And then that he stopped cos he was so drunk, and that the captain had to take it instead, sorry I just don't buy it. What, Howard was so drunk he couldn't walk out onto a field at 11am every day, but was sufficiently recovered to deal with the national press every weekend without turning a hair? And the captain had to take the training, why him and not Colin Harvey or Adrian Heath? Sorry no.
And what, Howard forced him out, why? we weren't able to spend the money? i could understand it if we funnelled the Speed money into another signing, but we didn't we were set to sink like a stone when he left.
Dalglish has a long and undistinguished record for tapping up our players going back to Neville (the good one) and Asshead. I think he did the same here. NOt that I've got a problem with it in Speed's case, he was a good lad but he wanted a move in my view, and still loved the club. But at the endof the day, if he had wanted to stay at Everton surely he would have.

You could just tell he was a classy guy as well- repsected by everyone, made captaiin pretty much everywhere he went.

RIP Speedo.

One question though- that 96/97 side did it under achieve? When you look through the squad at that time it was a pretty formidable side, maybe it should have done better. Maybe a thread for another day.

We started the season well mate, 23 from the first 14 games (so actually better than this season) - over the season that would have seen us finish 5th.

Then the season fell apart - not helped by selling Kanchelskis in January and we got 7 from the next 14 games, not helped by stuff obviously happening behind the scenes as well - manager/chairman relationship in the bin by all accounts, and cherry on the top was 2-3 players in the first team where always missing

On the numbers Dave. Just one note being pedantic though about terminology he never wanted "to get his transfer away", he wanted to stay.

Yes understand what you mean evertony but there was no way Gary could have stayed at Everton given the circumstances
of his situation .

Well Kev you stick to what you believe, Gary could have elaborated on what happened but, to his credit and Everton's
reputation, he chose not, so I'm happy, for Gary's sake to leave it at that and let sleeping dogs lie.

I think most would go with this.

Gary Speed himself was happy to leave it at that don't forget.

I doubt any of us will ever know the true ins and outs so let's remember a nice man and Evertonian.

As a Welsh Evertonian he is my all time footballing hero, a top player, and according to pretty much all his fellow professionals, a top man, Rest In Peace Gary.
