Tottenham forward Jermain Defoe compares his team-mate's evolution from winger to goal-scorer to that made by Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United

Defoe was speaking before the Welshman scored Spurs' opening goal in their 3-0 win over Inter Milan in the Europa League last 16.

Bale's sixth minute header, his 11th goal in his last nine games, put the Londoners in front before Gylfi Sigurdsson turned in from close range after Defoe's shot was blocked.

Defender Jan Vertonghen added the third in a comfortable victory that puts Spurs in control of the tie ahead of next Thursday's second leg at the San Siro.

Said to my Spurs mate he's capable of 20 and to regarded as one of the best in the league he needs to be doing that regular. This season he has done.

To get near the likes of Ronaldo he needs to be getting 40+. Think that may be a little bit beyond him.

I think leaving Spurs would be a massive mistake too. The whole set-up is built around his game. He won't get that at a really top club. Perhaps with the exception of Bayern if they fancied him.

Hes a great player without a doubt but he cant be compared to ronaldo, ronaldo is in the same league as messi but bale certainly isnt. Sure he scored a lot of goals and some of them are great but so does van persie and suarez and they arnt being compared to him
