Lille's need to sell Gabriel Magalhaes for as high a price as possible has been reinforced after the club were hit with Financial Fair Play sanctions.

Everton had been working on a £30m-deal with the Ligue 1 club to sign the centre-half before the coronavirus crisis struck earlier this year.

Gabriel was believed to be keen on making the switch to Goodison but the Blues made it clear to Lille that they were no longer willing to meet the asking price and would have to renegotiate.

A host of new clubs have reportedly entered the race to sign the 22-year-old but his future remains up in the air.


Everton remain keen on a player they have been tracking since last season.

Lille are still hoping to find a buyer to meet their valuation and the club's need to make as much profit as possible, from the sale of a player they bought for just £1.5m, has been hammered home after an FFP ruling.


Uefa's Club Financial Control Body Investigatory Chamber has ruled that Lille have been in breach of FFP regulations and confirmed the club have reached an agreement with the governing body to cover the next four seasons, in order for Lille to balance their books.

Lille must not post losses of more than €20m at the end of the 2021 financial year and then €10m the year after that and then be fully compliant with Uefa's rules which insist on losses of no more than €30m over a three year 'monitoring' period.

The French club also agreed to have up to €9m of earnings from European competition withheld.

But Lille's need to maximise profits from player sales - an area the club has excelled in recently - was reemphasised after Uefa ruled that for the next two seasons they could only name new signings in their List A squad for European competition if the club records a "net positive transfer balance".

If true, no doubt brands will get hammered if we don't sign him, but you've got to look at the bit picture. It sets a precedence that we wont just pay clubs what they want in the future. Seems to be the same with allan.

Which would be ideal in a world where we are the only team bidding for a player.
As it is, all the players we want are also wanted by other clubs. So if we don't meet the asking price, another club will.
I think it's a good look for a club that wants to be transfer savvy, but there's also the risk we'll always get outbid.

That suggests a 30 million pound deal in March would have been a significant overpay (especially considering all of the suitors) post-COVID. It sounds to me like Brands made the right call to wait out the uncertainty.

If 22 proves to be the fee it was the right thing to back off and renegotiate. If it means we loose out (likely by the sound of things) so be it.

Priority is a CM (or two), and getting rid of several high earners who don't really offer much.

Dont think Walcott will go anywhere to be honest. 1 year left on his deal and hes still our best option on the right apart from Richarlison, even if we bring a starter in he would still be a good squad player.

If we can get some value from selling him then it's a different story, but I can't see anyone offering us anything worth taking.

That's true. Brands had a price for Mina and held fast. He has a price for Gabriel and is holding fast. He had a price for Iwobi and Arsenal ran so fast with that offer the road runner would have been impressed.
