Free Kicks vs Corners

Every single corner should be taken short in my opinion. The only exception should be if you're desperate for a goal with 5 minutes or less to go.

Completely agree with your sentiment.

But speaking from experience, you have to "throw away" one or two by launching them into the box; otherwise the opposition will just send two men over to the corner every time and nullify the short option.

We should just work all of our corners to the middle of the pitch 25 yards from goal. Then just do stepovers until we win a free kick.

Surely there must be ways of countering this?

I've found a couple of ways.

Option One: When the short option offers for the ball, he's allowed nearer the kicker than the opposition.

So he runs towards the ball, which is played short to him. The two opposition players start to take a man each, whilst the corner taker overlaps the man with the ball. One oppo goes towards the man with the ball, whilst the other follows the overlapping runner.

This creates a gap through which a pass can be made to a third man who makes a late run towards the corner.

Option Two: Play the ball all the way back towards the half way line (along the sideline on which the corner is being taken) where one of your covering defenders has peeled wide to receive the pass. This is a lot riskier though, as you are bringing one of your covering players into the game, when their sole purpose should be to prevent the quick counter.

In the Timmy Cahill days, every time we got a corner I expected us to score. Now every time we get a free kick 25-30 yards out I expect us to score.

One day, we may be lethal from both types of set piece!

I think we do our corners out swinging so if we don't connect with it it comes outside of the box to one of are players so we can keep possession and carry on playing it patiently around the box and keep the team pressed back were as if we done in swinging if we don't connect the keeper will catch the ball and throw it out to a player to counter attack either one has its pros and cons but i think the out swinging corners work better for our possession based style

We need to work on corners to improve our conversion rate -
i have absolutely no expectation when we take one -
our deliveries are generally poor and sub-standard -
we also have to take care of the number of penalties we concede - most of all clubs this season - 6 already -
some clubs like Man United, Man City and Chelsea have conceded none - no surprize

Stick Deulofeu on them, he scored for Barcelona B from a corner.

yeah, he's probably the best with them in the team. i remember earlier in the year he was having a stormer against someone and there was a corner, he grabbed the ball and set it up...only to have someone take it from him(i think it was baines). you could see he was a bit miffed..
