Bob Marley Playing Football in Pictures
By Dela S. A.
Aside from recording his reggae music, football played a major role throughout Bob Marley’s life. Football had allowed him to express himself freely, and it inspired him to continue to write music each day. Whenever he had spare time, he played and enjoyed the Beautiful Game. From parking lots to the recording studio, you could not find Marley without a ball at his feet. He even hired Jamaican footballer Allan “Skill” Cole as his manager (who eventually was credited with co-writing the 1976 song, “War”). Growing up, he idolized Pelé and passionately followed the Brazilian club he played for, Santos.
During a trip to Rio de Janeiro in 1980, Bob Marley joined in a street match with fellow musicians, kids and Paulo César, a member of the 1970 Brazilian World Cup winning team. Bob, prior to the game, had received Pele’s Santos kit. Throughout the ferocious match, many attentively watched him play. Paulo years later recalled the match saying “[that] game was actually short. Everything was quick, thank God, because the game was horrible. Bob was really bad. He simply couldn’t play. From 1 to 10 I would give him 1.5.”But, Bob Marley did not care. His love for the game was too great and often overshadowed his ability to play. One year later he passed away.
“Football is a whole skill to itself. A whole world. A whole universe to itself. Me love it because you have to be skillful to play it!Freedom! Football is freedom.” (Bob Marley in 1979)”
