I agree with you that focusing on defensive positioning pre-match makes a difference but I can never keep a clean sheet against any of the top 5-6 sides it seems. I play on standard with one defensive midfielder and two central mids but who knows.

I started with Rangers and I'm now with City as they offered me the job in 2017/18 and I've managed about two clean sheets against the top 4 (and Liverpool, who are insanely good on this, but I still smash them 5-6:0 every single time, even if I've not managed a result like that even against relegation fodder!) .

Defenders are FB(Attack) on both sides (Zabaletta and Bernat), and BPD Cover and Stopper (Stones and Otamendi/Kompany, doesn't really matter which one is in which position). Found success with that, but it takes some time for them to get familiar with the tactic - before that with Rangers I had the same sub-roles but on CD, for obvious reasons, and Danny Wilson and Ty Browning (!) made a formidable duo in defence lol

I don't play a DM at all though - 2 CM's and an AM, with IF and Winger as AMR/L, both on support. CM's are BWM(D) and DLP(S), attacking mid is AP(A). With Rangers it used to be BWM(S), DLP(S) and AP(S), but that never worked for me with City or Everton (on a test save I ran for a season and did mediocre), so I had to change them a bit so it's more balanced, otherwise they ran into each other pretty much half the time!

Found insane success with Rangers, winning everything including the Europa League within 2 seasons, which is why City gave me the job I guess.. Was top runner for both them and United as well lol now it's slightly harder with City, but still bossing it for obvious reasons - Aguero, Icardi, Rafinha, Toure, Chochev (surprisingly fantastic player who can cover any CM roles, and I've played him as a CB as well and he did great! lol ), Bernat were they when I got there, just had to sign Stones and sell a few crap players! Plus they finished 5th the season before so they're in the Europa and that's a piece of piss.

One thing I do is to never change roles to be fair. Only role that gets changed in my tactic is the centre forward, and that's only if I'm playing Aguero there (complete forward) or Icardi/Bony/Jovetic (Advanced Forward).

Also mine differs from yours as it's usually on Control and shorter passing, or going to attacking if I'm absolutely bossing the games.

Finding this year extremely difficult compared to years past.

I'd ususally find a formation that works and just stick with that all season, now, the computer clocks on to you and starts to adapt I find. Frustrating you and making you change a lot.

Currently Birmingham after being sacked by Valencia. First time I'd been sacked in about 5 FM's. Mad.

Good though, challenging finally.

I know, I've actually had to think on ways to improve my team now that I'm not in a one horse race in Scotland lol

And the saves I did try with Everton and that seemed much harder!

Has player potential changed slightly or is it just me? I've seen players on my Everton save who are absolute crap, and now finding the same ones with "wonderkid" status on my Rangers/City save a few years on...

I reckon it has, it did last year too.

I remember Jonjoe Kenny being awful on my Everton save and then looking elsewhere and seeing him at Chelsea/Arsenal for 20/30 Million.

Neither do I, I think you can be defensive by making your players more compact and narrow and pressing higher up the pitch without a DM/DMs.

I switch between a two man midfield and a three man midfield with a two man DLP(D) and a DLP(S) or a BWM(D) and a CM(S), former for weaker sides and the latter for stronger sides where I can attack with a more defensive partner next to him, and a DLP(D) and DLP(S) with an AM(A) above him in the three man. I think it's quite balanced in the two man midfield, because I play with a DLF(S) as well who I set to move into channels and normally I train the 'Come Deep to Get Ball' trait to balance it a bit more.

Yeah, I almost bought it the other day but I'm glad I swerved it now. Far too much chatter and far too many players throwing a hissy fit and being unreasonable. Tedium manager 2016, and I've been a huge fan for years.

I'm still knocking round on 14, creating the odd league or two in the editor or creating interesting scenarios.

I find they're all much of a muchness, not much seems to change year by year.

Started a season with Portsmouth a few months ago now, achieved back to back promotions to the championship. Then had a season to consolidate in the championship then managed to go up through the play offs, after sneaking in on the last day. Struggling massively in the prem, can't seem to get anything to work with my defence, would happily take a 17th place finish at the minute.

If you start a new season with Everton you have to offer Stones and Barkley a new contract before you even click continue.
