Buying my dad my first legit pint on my 18th birthday.

However when I felt like a MAN was a year before that.
Don’t think too hard.

Equal parts leaving home, earning my own way in the world, buying my first house, and marriage. Then started to feel old when I complained to the neighbours about the noise coming from their party..... At 9:30pm.

Eating a bar of Bournvile dark chocolate... the advert said only for adults so I waited till I was 16

I know madness

Remember it well and will never forget it. It was 1978 and I was 14 years old and my Dad had just been killed on his motorbike by a drunk driver. To make matters a million times worse my Sister who was 21 was getting married 2 days after my Dad was killed so the wedding reluctantly went ahead and she moved out of the house. From 4 people to 2 in the space of a couple of days it was just myself and my Mum who was a dithering wreck, I had no option I had to grow up !!!

If my army 'wake up call' (see earlier post) didn't do the job then my first jungle patrol on active service in Malaya (1955) did. Full jungle kit, rifle, bandolier with 50 rounds of ammo, I thought I was John Wayne. License to kill. Fortunately, in about a dozen patrols, we never had a 'contact' so never pulled the trigger. I was nineteen, what a prat I was now I think back.
