I though the international teams or something had some type of vote few weeks ago to expand this comp,and the vote was a big no then,cant stand international footy,but passes time by when theres no Everton,or no footy i suppsoe
The World Cup is getting ridiculous, 48 teams in the finals. How long would that take to play. 12 groups of four, 1st and 2nd going into 6 groups of 4 with 1st, 2nd and 4 best 3rd places going into a 16 team knockout. That is 135 games with 10 stages. Even going well that is 6 weeks. Leagues would have to be shortened to give good teams a chance.
I propose each Federation runs it's own tournament, the winners and runners up go to the World Cup finals. 16 teams max, straight knockout. The only qualifying would be for your own Federation tournament.
We would end up with less international games but more meaningful games. It would also make playing internationals more meaningful for the players.

Hate the idea, but 80 matches not 135.
16X3 groups so 48 group matches, 32 teams in knockout stage, so further 31 meaningful matches and the 3rd place play-off.
In effect the only extra matches are the round of 32 ones.

If that is the way it is to be played then it is an even worse idea than I first thought. You would have teams traveling to a tournament for two games. So a country goes through the qualifying, goes through all the logistics of setting up in the finals for two games.
Even if you win your group you could be out in the first knockout stage.
The knockout stages would have to be seeded, can't see the bigger nations wanting an open draw and meeting each other with 32 teams left in. But how do the logistics work for that. Teams could be based at different ends of a country.
Also does a 48 team World Cup Finals rule out smaller or developing countries from hosting as they cannot provide the infrastructure. Or do we have 5 or 6 countries hosting with all the issues that brings.

Not a hope. It's driven by money if you read the article. More games = higher TV rights imo.

Oh, that's not in question. I was only saying what I would prefer. What they should do it let all the nations in. It would take about four years to play down to a final, then they can start all over again.
I can see an argument for a 40 team World Cup with 8 groups of 5 (2 from 5 to progress to final 16). I can also see an argument for a final elimination event for (say) 32 teams in straight k-o with 4 places (in that 40) up for grabs. This could easily be done and dusted in 3 weeks (at some point between November and the following June when the finals would be held). That could include all the 3rd place losers in Europe and a load of African/Asian/South American/other Confederations also rans.
