FC Copenhagen suggest changes to Champions League which brings back qualification for finishing 4th

I agree with it actually

It's ridiculous that you can finish 4th in our league and get straight in to the CL Group Stages whilst winning a League elsewhere means you have to go through 4 rounds of qualifying

None of the English sides in the CL have really been tearing it up this season and I genuinely dispute the overall quality of our League outside of the top two, so it's only fair that we start making 4th placed teams do a little graft before enjoying the financial windfall that comes with the Champions League

Hopefully this will lead to a greater distribution of wealth, with teams from smaller Leagues actually getting to make the Group Stages more often

I'm all for it. Ultimately if an already monied Premier League side can't manage to qualify then it's their own fault. They already have a huge advantage

You say that, but all four teams made it out of the Group stages.
Teams from smaller leagues like Celtic can't do that, so why reduce the number of games they make money off by dumping them straight into the Group stage?

Bring back knockout footballllll!

The group stages only exist for TV money nd to give the big teams a better chance.

Just call it the European cup and forget about champions.

No one wants to see absolutely rubbish teams in the knockout stages of europe even if they did win their division. We want the best sides playing the best sides.

I watch some irish league football and I do genuinely enjoy it. But the best teams are league 2 level. To suggest the champion should be playing CL group games against Bayern Munich or BBarcelona etc is ridiculous.

Picking a random year, when Forest won the EC in 1980, they beat the Swedish champs, the Romanian champs, the east German champs, Ajax and Hamburg across 9 games. I don't think anyone would say that isn't enormously easier than Liverpool's route last year, when they played PSG, Napoli, Red Star, Bayern, Porto and Barca before beating Spurs over a total of 13 games.

What the old format did appear to support, however, was a greater diversity of talent across teams, so not only did teams from competitions in Romania, Yugoslavia (as was), Portugal and the Netherlands win, but you also had more teams within each league capable of rising to the top as talent and money wasn't so concentrated in a relatively small number of teams.

The Champions League has been in operation for 27 seasons, and in that time it's had 11 different winners from 7 different countries, with 4 of those coming in the first 5 seasons. In the 27 years before that, you had 17 different winners from 9 different countries.

Incidentally, a team from England, Spain, Italy or Germany has not won the competition for 15 seasons, and just once out of the last 24 seasons. It's become almost guaranteed that a team from one of those four leagues will win the competition.

100% agree. This was set up to protect the 'big boys' but they didnt think ahead and think one year, one of them wouldnt qualify.
