It is a process.
Building the squad will be a bit like building the stadium, it will take time.
The announcement of a new stadium will speedily be followed on here by posters questioning if there is a real deal in place because the spades won't be in the ground days after the announcement.
The expectations were possibly too high , fuelled in part at leat by posters on here but largely by a general air of optimism around the club.
I think the business that we did in previous years would have been considered very shrewd.
We have brought in players that were the best at their clubs in Gueye, Williams and Bolasie and they all know the premiership.
Stekelenburg cost very little money and in these early days is proving to be more than useful.
I have already posted elsewhere that I think Valencia will possibly be the best signing of all and will surprise many on here.
The biggest bonus of all is that in spite of losing John Stones, we have replaced him with a player that could well prove to be as good or better in Holgate.
This was step one of several steps.
This week it was hoped that we would be able to take possibly steps two and three and it is disappointing that did not happen.
The management team now have another four months to further assess their squad and more importantly put in place deals that are not rushed and last minute.
It is after the deadline of the summer of 2017 that we will more accurately be able to guage where Koeman is taking the club, after all he will have been in control for one year at that stage.
The issue I have with this "building" metaphor is I am not convinced if we don't acknowledge what has gone wrong we are building on something that doesn't work. Einstein famously said madness is doing the same thing again and expecting different results.
I think we need a major overhaul of how we do transfer and that does involve acknowledging what has gone wrong. I am a bit sick of plans in all honesty, we had plans under Moyes, plans under Martinez and in neither case did we ever get any closer to the end goal. It just felt like a way for people not to be accountable. If we want to be somewhere we need to do it, but talk about it being done in 2/3 years.
What I think needs to be improved;
1) Identification- We need to ensure the lads we are identifying are realistic and from leagues we can buy from.
2) Clarity- Spotting the weaknesses in the squad and finding relevant players to fill that need.
3) Timing- Not leaving everything to the last day/(s) of the window. Players need to be brought in for the start of the season, no excuses.
4) Competence- Closing deals is critical. Why was Walsh waiting several deals to complete the Perez deal? We have ended up with Valencia as a result. If Perez scores more than Valencia this season what come back will there be for Walsh and not getting the deal completed?
More importantly Kenwright and Elstone have overseen year after year of failure of transfer windows. They both need to go. I believe they were overseeing transfer towards the end when deals started going array. If not then somebody else needs to accept responsibility for the farce of a window. We have been left majorly light and we still don't have a premier league standard lad who can play up front on his own instead of Rom. For the nth consecutive season we still don't have a left footed winger or a creative midfielder.
Come January this needs sorting. We can all see the difficulties and areas that need improvements. We have all given them all summer without moaning and sufficient time for every excuse imaginable to be trotted out. Come January 1st we need to have lads in and signed and that means working on deals beforehand.
