My great uncle was awarded the VC in the First World War for going out into no mans land under enemy fire to search for his commanding officer several times , fruitlesly, however each time he brought back a wounded member of his platoon.

Depends on what it is and who is accepting it...you can pick and choose what you believe. There is though plenty of unaccepted proof...infact that far back nobody knows.

Most estimates suggest this is absolute garbage.
Likely to be in the region of 100 billion who ever lived, so well under 10% of the people who ever lived are alive now.
