Player Valuation: £60m

The news that James McFadden is on his way to Birmingham will put a smile on the face of the Fir Park treasurer. It is understood that we negotiated a decent sell-on clause when he left us for Everton.

He left us in 2003 for a fee variously reported as being between £1.25M to £2M but we get a great bonus as a result of the sell-on clause. It was reported at the time that we would get 12.5% of any fee above £1.25M (more if he was to go to the Old Firm). So a fee of £5M between Everton and Birmingham would mean close to £470 000 arriving at Motherwell.

Faddy was always on the fringe of the Everton team and never became a fixture in their first team. His stunning goals for Scotland kept him in the headlines and it hardly came as a surprise that his former national manager should target Faddy as he tries to move Birmingham up the table.

The windfall comes with the transfer window still open for a further two weeks. Whether Mark McGhee will see much of the cash remains to be seen but the money should ensure that Motherwell remain in the black for another season.

Thanks again Faddy !

This is new to me, Never heard this before.

It wouldnt surprise me to be honest he was more or less a kid when he came to us so a sell on clause would be par for the course

As far as I'm aware, Motherwell did negotiate a sell-on-clause. I actually thought it was 12.5% of the total transfer fee. But anyway, we'll still receive around £5m for the lad (if we believe Sky). Not bad business for someone who'll never figure in Moyes' revolution.

Do you pay capital gains tax when you sell a player?

You might but my guess is that Everton (or any other club for that matter) could find enough losses in that year to offset the gain.

That is if they don't have any carry forwards from prior years (assuming that you can do that in England)

(After further thought, my guess is that they have a loss carry forward on the sale of Beattie...heh)
