FA Cup or 5th?

Here's a tip.

You see when you pose a question and then are "bewildered" that people can't "grasp" it, the chances are the question itself is the problem.

One would have thought the question was pretty simple....it says "Cup or 5th" in the title.

Not surprisingly, the vast majority of people have said they would choose the Cup.

One would think that would be the end of it.

But no.....we find there is a whole sub context to the question.....and the bloke who posed it is "bewildered" that the rest of us aren't interested in psycho analysing ourselves to know what we we really feel about it.

You gotta love GOT :celebrate:

I guess I shouldn't have bothered actually typing words after the thread title.

I'm going to repeat myself again. This is a perception question. A psychological question.

The question was not "which would you prefer"? It was not "Do you want to win the cup?". Jesus, Mary, and Joseph we ALL want to win the cup. Whether we are 1st, 5th, or 18th. I'm not sure where you all got the idea I don't value it. One of the most depressing days of my life was when we lost to Chelsea.

The question was does a cup win render the league campaign moot...all forgiven? Would you feel just as good going into next season with 12th and a cup win or 5th challenging for top four?

I'm not saying the answer can't still be "cup". Several have given reasons why. I'm asking you hypothetically, if we had finished 5th, and played more consistently over 9 months, would you feel better about our prospects going forward than Cup run, worse, or would it be the same?

I'm sort of bewildered why that is such a hard question to grasp??
A cup win would render the rest of the season moot, for most people I would imagine, as by definition it is sadly the most successful season we will have had since '95 with us having actually won something.
Will a cup win cover up an underperformance in the league, yes. I'm sure however that people will be aware of that underperformance in the league and expect a genuine improvement next season.
If the question is whether a 5th place finish or a midtable finish and a cup win sets us up better for next season, it's tough to say.
I believe we have all the ingredients for success in this team, bar a winning mentality.
Actually winning the cup would foster that mentality more than any 5th place finish IMO, with that 5th place finish we're still knocking our heads on the glass ceiling and aren't achieving palpable success.
Our future goals are realistically competing for Top 4 and eventually the League title.
A cup win is a step in the right direction to achieving that winning mentality, retaining players and moving forward as a team IMO.

I think cup win will convince the fab 4 to give it one more season except if they excel in the Euros and we get offered silly money. 5th means nothing in contact of looking back in 20 years but players will always have a cup winners medal.

Agree with this. Getting a job done is a huge barrier to get over. We could stop getting jittery every time we are on the verge of wins let alone trophies. Control the controllable etc..
Doesn't always happen but with a talented squad it should

I would take FA cup over 5th...but would take a CL spot (4th place finish) over a Cup every time.

Would you?

I think a fourth place finish is like Espresso coffee.

It gives you the boost of an instant shot of caffeine but it soon fades.

Winning a cup, however, is etched in your memory forever.

I mean, who among us regards 2005 with greater affection than 1995?

None but them as are too young to recall Elland Road and Wembley in that glorious Spring near the end of the last century.

And for those who don't remember the Dog's day out, the memory of 2005 And 4th place will be totally overshadowed if Bobby's Boys pull it off in May.

It's a glory game.

Always was.....always will be ;)
